Showing Their True Colors — Newtown Winter Color Guards Have Strong Performances

Newtown’s Winter Color Guard program had strong showings each of the last two Saturday nights in Musical Arts Conference competition at Jonathan Law High School and Naugatuck High School.

At Law last Saturday the Junior Guard, comprised of students from Reed Intermediate School, received its highest score of the season.

The Juniors won the second place trophy for their spirited performance of their show “New Soul.” At Naugatuck, on March 18, the guard also captured the second place trophy, finishing just one point behind rival Bethel.

The captains of the Newtown Junior guard are sixth-graders Maddy Hintzen, Ally Montague and Kelsea Morshuk.

The AAA Guard (Junior Varsity) presented its strong routine “The Iron Titans” in the two recent MAC competitions. At Jonathan Law the team was awarded first place in its class, edging out units from Bethel, Amity and Brien McMahon high schools. At Naugatuck, the team placed in second in the division.

The AAA Guard consists of students from Newtown Middle School, with captains Cherokee Belval and Victoria Hanulik leading the guard.

The Newtown Varsity Winter Color Guard received a standing ovation from the crowd after both performances of “Have You Got It In You.”

The competitors took home the SNA class first place trophy at Law in a difficult technical performance. At Naugatuck, the guard overpowered perennial threat Shelton High School by 3.7 points.

The varsity guard is made up of 14 students from Newtown High School and Middle School. Both first place trophies were presented to captains Nicole Scalora and Sarah Smith.

The three Newtown guards will conclude their season March 28 at the MAC Championships at Trumbull High School.
