September Programs Include

Caregiving, Love & Knishes

SOUTHBURY — Caring for someone who is chronically or seriously ill can take an emotional and physical toll on relatives. That is true whether the person being cared for suffers from Alzheimer’s, a stroke, cancer, mental illness, or something else.

Caregivers rarely get time to themselves and are often burdened with trying to figure out their family member’s physical needs. A four-week Caregivers’ Course, hosted by Brownstein Jewish Family Service and Regional Hospice, will focus primarily on caregiver burnout, emotional issues, community resources, introduction to durable medical equipment and the physical needs of patients such as how to safely transfer or even bathe a loved one without injuring your back.

There is no cost to attend the program, which is facilitated by Carolyn Wolfe, MSW.

In other news, two musical programs will be featured during September at the Love & Knishes Lunch Program in the Jewish Federation’s social hall at 444 Main Street North. On September 1, singer and pianist Larry Batter make his annual appearance at the luncheon and plays old standards, show tunes, Yiddish favorites and some jazz songs, and also regale the audience with his puns, stories and jokes.

On September 15, singer/guitarist Willie Nininger performs a program of music written by some of the best Jewish songwriters of the 20th Century. Mr Nininger will play and sing music by Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, George Gershwin, Allan Sherman, and others.

All area adults age 60 and better are invited to make reservations to enjoy themselves with Jordan Caterers of Cheshire’s bountiful and healthful hot lunch, which is served at noon and followed by entertainment at 1 pm. For the past ten years, Jordan’s has had the distinction of being named Connecticut’s Best Caterer by Connecticut Magazine.

Lunch reservations must be made by the Friday before each lunch. All programs are open to the public, and there is a suggested lunch donation of $7.50 for adults age 60 and better and $9.50 for those under 60.

To register for all programs, call 267-3177, extension 105.
