It’s looking like a calm weekend for music in Newtown, but that isn’t always a bad thing. The weather is cooling and the leaves (at my house, anyway) are already starting to drop.

Mocha Coffee House in Sandy Hook has music coming up by STEVE NEYLON on Friday, and then an acoustic jam will fill the place on Saturday night.

Neylon is a 21-year old Newtowner. He plays guitar and his style of music, according to Mocha notes, “tends to fall into the acoustic pop rock category” (think Jack Johnson and Howie Day). He perform original songs that fall into a “more alternative pop style.” He’s going to be headlining Friday, September 4, beginning at 8.

Acoustic musicians and those who love listening to them are invited to fill 3 Glen Road on Saturday night. Also starting at 8, an open forum promises to produce “a mixed bag of popular and traditional tunes.”

Next weekend, KRISTIN ZHEA will celebrate her birthday by headlining at Mocha on Friday night. (Early birthday wishes to my young friend Makayla Slaiby, also celebrating her birthday on September 11). Kristin “writes songs to process the joys and heartbreaks of her personal life, but with a twist.” Find out how next week.

And then Saturday will be the time for RYAN WEBER, who grew up in the Connecticut suburbs and began composing music as a teen.

*One additional road note this weekend, for a local musician. JOE PROC will be playing a solo show at Proud Mary’s on Main Street on Saturday, from 8:30 until 11:30 am.

That’s it folks. Really. I told you it was a quiet week.

Until next week, I’ll be seeing you… on the road. Literally. C’mon Newtown, it’s time for our big parade! See you Monday!

Questions and comments should be sent to Shannon Hicks c/o The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road, Newtown CT 06470, or shannon@thebee.com, or call the office at 426-3141. Shows listed at clubs are for ages 21 and over unless specified.
