Parade Proves An Irresistible Draw For Politicians

BY STEVE BIGHAM

Monday's Labor Day Parade will once again be the place for political

candidates looking to receive a bit of free exposure.

The parade comes just two months before the November elections, which include

a handful of state and local races. In a way, it serves as an unofficial

kick-off to what promises to be an election season worth watching.

Heading the list is Gov John Rowland and Lt Gov Jodi Rell. Democratic

challenger Barbara Kennelly is also expected to make an appearance as part of

her statewide weekend bus tour.

Before both Rowland and Kennelly, however, will be First Selectman Herb

Rosenthal, who is expected to march with his wife, Michelle. Unlike last year,

Mr Rosenthal's march will have nothing to do with politics. He said he is

simply marching as Newtown's first selectman.

Also marching will be US Congressman Jim Maloney of the Fifth District and his

Republican challenger Mark Nielsen.

Both Tom Ganim and John McKinney will also be seen on the parade route,

seeking support in their bid to take over the state senate's 28th District

seat.

Democrat Andrew Nunn will be on hand along with Republicans Pat Shea and Ed

Callo. All three are hoping to take over the 112th state representative seat,

which was recently vacated by Bill Varese. The Republicans will face-off in a

September 15 primary with the winner taking on Mr Nunn in November.

Of course, Julia Wasserman will be seen along Main Street come Labor Day. She

is running unopposed, but always enjoys saying "hello" to her constituents.

US Senate hopeful Gary Franks will be on hand as will John Stripp, who is

running unopposed in the 135th state congressional district.

There's an interesting race going on for Fairfield County's high sheriff post.

With the longtime sheriff recently stepping down, Democrat Steven Frank DeVito

of Stamford and Charlie Valentino of Bridgeport are vying to take over the

seat. Both will march on Monday.
