NMS Educators Featured At New England Middle Level Conference
Six staff members from Newtown Middle School attended the New England League of Middle Schools 28 Annual Conference, from April 5 to 7, in Providence, R.I. The conference focused on improving student learning for young adolescents.
The conference brought together teachers, principals, assistant principals, college and university professors, and other educators from throughout the nation. More than 180 sessions were held on topics like what makes an excellent school, middle level school leadership, student motivation, effectively educating 10- to 14-years-olds, parent/community partnerships and involvement in the middle school technology, and developing relevant curriculum.
Assistant Principal Kathy Boettner and five colleagues, Phil Cruz, Jennifer Sinal, Valerie LeBlanc, Oona Mulligan, and Brooke Unger, presented a session called âClassroom Chronicles: Portfolios of Progress.â The goal of this session was to focus on the use of student portfolios across the disciplines so that students can have a broad picture of their growth and abilities over time as they set goals in their learning.
