Horse Guard Holds Recruit Class Graduation

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard held a Military Graduation Ceremony at its headquarters located at Fairfield Hills on June 28. Members of the seven-person recruit class received graduation certificates and spurs after completing a 22-week basic training course.

Anthony Farina, Barbara Godejohn, Elene Moore, Wade Moore, Kim Park, Heather Testa and Kathleen Weinzierl were all welcomed into the Troop as the newest 2GHG Privates.

Attending dignitaries included State Representatives Christopher Lyddy (Newtown) and Jason Perillo (Shelton); Major William Oefinger and SFC Kevin McCrewell from the 1st Company Governor’s Foot Guard (1GFG); CPT Robert Mazzara and 1LT Leon Losapio from the 1st Company Governor’s Horse Guard (1GHG). Former Commandant Peter Moritz and Friends of 2GHG, Inc. secretary 2LT Comeau also attended. Friends and family of 2GHG members and the recruit class were on hand as well.

Five 2GHG members were recognized with Certificates of Recognition for their assistance in the training program: SSG Lauren Chirgwin, SGT Jose F. Rosa, SGT Matt Comeau, PFC Linda Clearwater and PFC William Goessinger. 1GHG CPT Robert Mazzara also received a Certificate of Recognition to his help with the recruit training. 2GHG Major Gordon Johnson acknowledged 2LT Jennifer Mazzara and 1SG Paul Mazzara for running the Recruit Training program. Finally, Major Oefinger awarded Major Johnson the title of Honorary Captain in 1GFG, for his work and efforts to unite the four Militia units.

After the ceremony, the new privates were shown how to open a champagne bottle with a saber, courtesy of former 2GHG Commandant Peter Moritz. Each Private then successfully opened a bottle and a round of toasts followed. The new privates then presented the troop with a marble bench for the 2GHG grounds.

The crowd moved inside and enjoyed food and drink; and then the new privates learned their final lesson: How to cut cake with a saber. Their success at opening champagne and cutting the cake with a saber ensures a successful career as 2GHG members. They join the Troopers and Mounts of the 2GHG and remain, as always, “Ready to Serve.”
