No Guard Horses Die For Economic Reasons

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the letter accusing the Governor’s Horse Guard of euthanizing horses for economic reasons. As the veterinarian for the Governor’s Horse Guard I wish to refute the allegations as a gross misstatement of fact. No horse at the Governor’s Horse Guard is euthanized for economic reasons. All decisions regarding euthanasia are made for medical reasons.

The horses at the Governor’s Horse Guard are maintained on a wellness program covering all aspects of health care. Examination and consultation regarding the health of the horses is conducted on a regular basis. The personnel at the Governor’s Horse Guard are intimately involved in the care of the horses at the facility and are always making every effort to insure the health and well being of the herd.
