Book Discussions: Reality Maps (….or Not Your Usual Memoir)

Julie Stern is back to lead another great book discussion. This time she will focus on four American memoirs. From Rory Stewart’s adventure narrative set in Afghanistan, where in 2003 he braved Taliban warlords, bandits and bad weather to walk across the entire country, to Mary-Ann Tyrone Smith’s description of blue collar Hartford in the 1940s and 1950s, where her life was darkened by the presence of a serial killer, and an autistic brother at home. And from the Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates’ chronicle of boyhood in a segregated West Virginia mill town, where colored society existed in its own parallel universe, to David Sedaris’ bitingly funny portrayal of life in North Carolina where he and his family were clearly oddballs in the heartland, these fascinating true accounts transport us to clearly mapped worlds, shaped by each writer’s personal vision of reality. By turns quirky, poignant, and unexpectedly hilarious, these four books offer insightful portraits of places and experiences different form our own, yet universal in their humanity.

Places in Between by Rory Stewart – January 13 at 7:30 pm

Girls of Tender Age by Mary-Ann Tyrone Smith– January 27 at 7:30 pm

The Colored People by Henry Louis Gates Jr. – February 10 at 7:30 pm
