Team One Is No. 1 — Newtown One Wins 11-Year-Old I-84 Travel League Title

Members of the Newtown One 11-year-old I-84 travel league baseball team completed their season with a championship game victory on Sunday.

The team placed first in the regular season and went undefeated through the playoffs to capture the championship and post a 24-3 record. In addition to league play, Newtown played several A  teams and a 12-year-old team. Newtown averaged 14 runs per game. The team only allowed, on average, four runs per game and posted five shutouts. Given the league pitching restrictions, eight different pitchers were used throughout the season.

Members of the team included, Jared Brady, Stephen Brittin, Chris Calo, Sam Czel, Joe Duero, Matt Elias, Matt Hess, Devin Luzietti, Shawn McCarthy, Mason Melillo, Nick Samuelson and Declan Sullivan. The team is managed by Ed Brady and coached by Bob Elias and Jim Luzietti.

In the championship game, Newtown One beat natural rival Newtown Two, 10-3. Newtown Oneexploded for five runs in the first inning. Czel doubled in Luzietti who had singled; Hess drove in Czel; and Elias had a big two-out single to drive in Brittin who was hit by a pitch and Calo who had walked. Samuelson closed out the rally by driving in Brady. The team tacked on two  more runs in the second inning. Czel again doubled in Luzietti and Hess drove in Czel.  Team One put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fifth inning, with Calo driving in two. Melillo, Luzietti and Elias pitched two stellar innings each. Brittin and McCarthy made several nice catches in the outfield.
