John Jason Stevens, Jr, 83, formerly of Newtown, died April 10. He lived in Mount Pleasant, S.C., where he is survived by his wife Frances Oliver Stevens, formerly a Newtown High School secretary; survivors also include grandchildren Sable Larrissa Stevens and Alex Tanner Stevens, both of Newtown.
Mr Stevens was born March 20, 1926, in Johnson City, Tenn., son of Nell Adele Tucker Stevens and John Jason Stevens, Sr. He graduated from Science High School in 1943 and from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., in 1946.
He served as a merchant marine, third assistant engineer during World War II and received the Pacific War Zone Bar. He was an avid golfer and a Mason in M.W. Lodge of Connecticut, #65 of All Free and Accepted Masons. He loved his Scottish heritage and was a member of the Scottish Society of Connecticut. He will be greatly missed by all he knew.
He is also survived by a daughter, sons, and additional grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted April 15 at Mount Pleasant Chapel; burial was private. Memorial contributions may be made to South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, 7130 H Highway 17, Awendaw SC 29429.
