Eastbound Crash
On October 6 at approximately 5:39 pm, state police responded to eastbound I-84 west of Exit 10 following a report of a minor vehicle collision. After a brief investigation, police reported that Jayce T. Balisciano, 19, of New Haven Road in Naugatuck was operating a 1995 Honda Civic when she struck the rear of a 1995 Mazda B3000 pickup being operated by a Bethel resident. There was damage to both vehicles and no injuries were reported, but the offending driverâs vehicle was towed from the scene. Balisciano was cited with following too close.
Aveo Vs Taurus
On October 7 at approximately 7:32 pm, troopers responded to I-84 eastbound in the area of Exit 11 following the report of a collision. At the scene they determined that Matthew Matula, 24, of Roxbury Road in Southbury was allegedly operating a 2004 Chevrolet Aveo in heavy traffic and rainy conditions when he attempted to stop for a vehicle in front and collided with that vehicle, a 1995 Ford Taurus being operated by a White Plains, N.Y., man. No injuries were reported, but Matulaâs vehicle was towed from the scene. He was subsequently issued a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
I-84 Crash
On October 8 at approximately 2:11 pm, state police responded to an accident report on I-84 eastbound at Exit 11. Upon arrival troopers found a 1995 Volvo being operated by James P. McGrath, 19, of Reservoir Road in Cheshire had collided with a 2001 International tractor-trailer being operated by a Clinton resident on behalf of the Stop & Shop supermarket company of North Haven. Police reported damage to both vehicles and neither driver was cited. Both vehicles were drivable from the scene.
Pump And Run
On October 8 at approximately 3:25 pm, police responded to the Citgo service station on South Main Street after employees there reported a white male pumped $20.04 worth of gas into his orange Dodge pickup and left the station without paying. Employees were able to provide police with minimal details about the driver, and were not certain about the registration number. Police subsequently released a Connecticut registration number 115 CTG as being the possible plate on the suspect vehicle. Anyone with information on this incident or the possible whereabouts of the vehicle or driver are asked to call the Newtown Police Department at 270-4255.
Rear Ender
On October 8 at approximately 12:17 pm, police responded to the intersection on Main Street and Church Hill Road to investigate a reported traffic collision. According to the report, Shirley S. Forsman, 84, of Carver, Mass., stopped her 2003 Buick Century on Church Hill Road. When she attempted to cross the intersection she was reportedly struck by a northbound Chevrolet Cavalier being operated by a driver from Waterbury. The front end of the Chevy and the rear left fender area of Forsmanâs vehicle were damaged in the crash, and her vehicle was towed from the scene. There were no reported injuries. Forsman was subsequently issued an infraction for failing to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
Car Hits Pole
At about 8:28 am on October 8, police responded to a single car crash on Mt Pleasant Road. In that incident, police reported that Marisol Zeas, 20, of Wooster Street in Danbury was traveling westbound in a 1994 Honda Civic when the driver reportedly lost control on the rain slicked roadway, traveling off the road, hitting a utility pole and coming to rest off the westbound shoulder. There were no injuries reported but the vehicle was towed from the scene. The driver was issued an infraction for operating without a license and traveling too fast for conditions.
Chain Reaction
On October 12 at approximately 2:25 pm, state police reported that Greg R Miller, 32, of Paris, Ill., was operating a 2001 Freightliner tractor-trailer westbound on I-84 in the area of Exit 9 when his vehicle struck the rear of a Saturn station wagon being operated by a Southbury resident. According to the report, the Saturnâs operator had pulled to the median to avoid striking another vehicle that had stopped short in heavy traffic when the minor collision occurred. Neither driver was injured or cited. The vehicles were drivable from the scene. As a result of the first collision, the Freightliner, which was being operated by Miller was struck by a second tractor-trailer being operated by John E. Elliot, 61, of Middletown, N.Y. The second truck then slid off the road and its trailer portion struck a 2006 Hyndai Sonata being operated by a driver from Placerville, Calif. No injuries were reported in the subsequent incident and those vehicles were also drivable from the scene.
Unlawful Passing
Newtown police reported that on October 7 at approximately 5:23 pm, Tomas F. Lourenco, 43, of Crystal Brook Road in Wolcott was traveling east on Church Hill Road in a 1995 Honda Accord when he reportedly attempted to pass stopped vehicles on the right side. His vehicle collided with a 2000 Chevrolet pickup being operated by a Morris resident, who police say was making a lawful turn into a retail plaza near the intersection of Edmond Road. Although Lourenco reportedly received minor abrasions from a deployed airbag, he refused medical treatment. His vehicle had to be towed from the scene, however. He was issued an infraction for passing on the right. The driver of the pickup, Kenneth P. Kearney, 49, was issued a warning for failure to carry an insurance card.
Jetta Vs Audi
On October 7 at approximately 6:14 pm, Michael Demand, 19, of Bearsville, N.Y., was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road in the area of Wasserman Way in a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta, when police say he collided with the rear of a 2000 Audi sedan being operated by a Sandy Hook resident. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and following a brief investigation, police issued Demand an infraction for following too close.
License Suspended
On October 7 at approximately 10:13 am, Newtown police reported 20-year-old Matthew Simpson of Pole Bridge Road in Sandy Hook was stopped on Route 6 for not having a front registration plate on his vehicle. After a brief investigation, police determined that Simpsonâs license was suspended and he was charged and placed under arrest. The driver was later released on $100 cash bond pending an October 21 court appearance.
DUI Among Charges
On October 8 at approximately 12:50 am, police reported that Brain A. Roberto, 33, of Derby Avenue in Derby was traveling east on Route 34 and allegedly operating his vehicle in an erratic manner. After he was stopped by police, he was given a field sobriety test and was arrested on charges of DUI, failure to drive in a direct course, driving at an unsafe speed, and failure to stay right on a curve. He was subsequently processed and released on a $20 cash bond pending an October 18 court date.
Failure To Respond
On October 12, Gina Ahearn of Dayton Street in Sandy Hook turned herself in to Newtown police after learning of a warrant for her arrest for failure to respond to an infraction for allowing a dog to roam and failure to comply with dog registration statutes. She was processed and subsequently released on bond pending an October 25 court appearance.
Discharging Firearm
On October 3, police arrested William Marchetti of Old Bridge Road in Sandy Hook for allegedly unlawfully discharging a firearm. According to the report, police were dispatched to Eichlerâs Cove Marina after the accused allegedly fired several rounds from a .38-caliber handgun, âin an attempt to scare several male juveniles that were on his property.â There were no injuries in the incident and the accused was arrested and subsequently released on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on October 20.
Motor Vehicle Charges
Police said they stopped motorist Warren Castro Zamora, 24, of Bridgeport on Church Hill Road about 9:47 pm October 6 for having an expired registration sticker displayed on the vehicle that he was driving.
After investigating, police charged Zamora with driving an unregistered vehicle and with driving while under suspension. After posting $200 bail, police released Zamora for an October 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
