Nighthawk Squads Begin State Tourney Action

Newtown High School's softball and baseball teams won first round Class LL state tournament games on May 29, and the girls' lacrosse team was eliminated from Class L, also on May 29.

Softball

The softball team, the No. 10 seed in the Class LL bracket, blanked No. 23 Simsbury 6-0 in the first round at NHS. Sara Kennedy allowed just two hits, struck out 14, and didn't allow a walk.

Katie Goyda had two doubles, two runs batted in, and a run scored; Shannon Cheh had a hit, RBI, walk, and run scored; Angela Carriero had a hit and run scored; and Kendra Saunders and Heather Stroili each had a hit, RBI, and run scored.

The Nighthawks, seeded sixth in the bracket, had their way with No. 27 Fairfield Warde with an 8-0 triumph at NHS.Baseball

Kyle Roche allowed just three hits in six innings, and Sam Smith tossed a perfect frame. Luke Melillo homered, walked twice, and drove in three runs. Harrison had a hit, walk, two RBI, and run scored; and Rob Murray drove in a run.

Newtown High School's girls' lacrosse team, seeded eighth in the Class L bracket, lost a hard-fought battle with No. 9 Fairfield Ludlowe, 6-5, at Blue andamp; Gold Stadium.Lacrosse

Alex Futterman scored twice, and Charli Condon, Rylee Harrell, and Lauren Carrino added goals for the Nighthawks. Carrino and Harrell each fielded three ground balls. Newtown goaltender Catie Gregory made six saves.
