A Rational Solution For The Flagpole Is Overdue By James A. Bergeron
To the Editor:"Tell The Police Commission Your Views On The Flagpole"Kudos to the Addessis for their thoughtful, informative letter to The Bee of March 11, 2016. [

I believe that some years ago the DOT offered a solution to the flagpole situation similar to some of the suggestions mentioned by the Addessis.ÃÂ At that time DOT wanted to move the flagpole to the area in front of the Meeting House, install overhead traffic lights and install pedestrian crosswalks in the general area. The town leaders at the time vetoed the proposal, as the town leaders have a right to do.ÃÂ ÃÂ Since that time the traffic in the Church Hill Road area has been rapidly increasing due especially, but not exclusively, to the increased businesses in the area.ÃÂ Just take a look at what is replacing Lexington Gardens.
Additionally, we are now in the process of having the town's major firehouse only yards from the junction of two state highwaysÃÂ partially blocked by the flagpole with no control of traffic at that intersection.ÃÂ It would seem inevitable that such a situation will lead to some catastrophic event.
It is past time to consider a rational solution to the improvement of the already troublesome intersection similar to that suggested by the DOT years ago.
