VINTAGE POSTER AUCTION TO OFFER MORE THAN 550 RARE ITEM WORTH MORE THAN $2 MILLION w/2 cuts
wd/lsb set 4/13 #696077
NEW YORK CITY â More than 550 vintage posters, many of them extremely rare and never-before-seen, will be offered for sale at an all-day auction Sunday, May 6. The total estimated value of the items being offered is more than $2 million, making it the largest sale in the 22-year history of Poster Auctions International.
The sale at the International Poster Center will feature an assortment of classic auto racing posters, including a collection of Monaco Grand Prix posters from 1929 to 1984, ranging in price from $1,000 to about $15,000 each.
According to auction organizer Jack Rennert, president of Poster Auctions International and an expert on poster art, âNapoleon,â a numbered and hand signed lithograph by Belle Epoch master Toulouse-Lautrec, is expected to fetch the highest price, with a presale estimate of $120/150,000.
Also in the pricing stratosphere is the rare âLa Rueâ by Steinlen. Rennert said the six-sheet poster, which measures 119 by 92 inches, is expected to sell for between $70,000 and $90,000.
Steinlen, who is best known for his popular images of children and cats, is represented in the sale by more than a dozen posters with all of his most popular images, making it one of the best Steinlen collections offered.
Another featured artist is Paul Colin, with 20 lots available. Included are six rare maquettes, including a never-before-seen 1925 design for the popular American dancer Loie Fuller.
Also of note are several rare pre-Castro Cuban travel posters, the popular Art Deco travel poster âNormandieâ by Cassandre, several works by Alphonse Mucha and collections of travel and winter sports posters.
All items in the auction will be on display from 11 am to 6 pm daily April 20 through May 5 at the International Poster Center, 13th floor, 601 West 26th Street in Manhattanâs Chelsea art district. The auction on May 6 will begin at 11 am.
