Newtown Continuing Education Courses
Smart Too! is a summer enrichment program for students in grades 6â10 who want a more in-depth exploration of their own artistic abilities. Professional artists Erin Walrath and Phyllis Boger of the Art Spot in Brookfield and instructors Leslie Gunn and Virginia Zimmerman will teach classes.
Fresco Secco Painting: Learn the art of painting with water-based media on dry plaster. Students will work from life as well as using photo references.
The Mask: Work in a variety of media to create masks. References from art history and different cultures will be used to create pieces that range from âmyth to magic.â
Sculpture: Students will explore the three-dimensional world of sculpture. Participants will make a variety of forms that include wire, clay, and stone making.
The Monoprint: Using the drawing and painting process, participants will create an original print type by building layers of color and shape within a specific image.
Pottery: A basic introductory and ceramic design class, the emphasis will be on both wheel throwing and hand-building techniques.
Polymer Clay: Participants will use traditional sculpting tolls to explore animal sculpture as well as miniature busts, portraits, beading and recreating the work of master artists in clay, flower or automobile sculpture, and more.
Other classes include pastel drawing and drawing with charcoal.
