Undercover Operation Nets Three Tobacco Sales ViolationsÂ
During an undercover tobacco sting operation conducted on June 29, town police, working with agents for the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), issued three violations to clerks at local businesses for the illegal sale of tobacco to minors, police said.
During the enforcement project, police and the DMHAS agents visited 20 local businesses that sell tobacco products to learn which businesses would illegally sell tobacco to people under age 18. DMHAS employs people under age 18 who work undercover in seeking to buy tobacco.
The infractions issued carry $200 fines for first offenses, police said.
Police listed the clerks at three businesses who allegedly illegally sold tobacco to the undercover agents.
They are: clerk Susan Odell of Sugar Hill Service Center at 153 Sugar Street; clerk Amber Hoyt of Church Hill Gas Stop at 47 Church Hill Road; and clerk Ibrahim Mazen of the Newtown Mobil gas station at 62 Church Hill Road, police said.
