WASHINGTON — South Kent resident Mary Miner will be the featured artist in the Upstairs Gallery at Washington Art Association for the months of May and June. Ms Miner will exhibit her landscapes, which are works on paper in colored pencil and gouache. Some of her pottery (vases with appliqued flowers and birds) will also be on display.

There will be an opening reception for the public on Saturday, May 13, from 1 to 3 pm. All the works on view are for sale.

Mary Miner has taught ceramics classes at Washington Art Association during the summers for over 20 years. She teaches both adults and children. During the winter she is a full-time ceramics teacher at Saint David’s School in New York City.

Although Ms Miner is a long-time ceramics teacher, her initial artistic education was in two-dimensional art. She studied drawing with Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Students League in New York and painting with both Edwin Dickinson at the League and Arnold Blanche in Woodstock, N.Y. When she became interested in pursuing pottery, she went to the Cooper Square School, and The Studio Workshop.

Even while teaching ceramics, Mary Miner has continued to pursue her love of drawing the landscape. She is currently working in colored pencil. All of her drawings are of local scenes. She always draws directly from the site, and she can be spotted throughout the summer, sometimes perched on top of her car, capturing a view.

Prior to working at Saint David’s, Ms Miner was a private guitar teacher. She continues to teach students every afternoon after school.

The Washington Art Association gallery is in Bryan Memorial Plaza in Washington Depot. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, 2-5 pm. For further information, call 860/868-2878.
