Residential Thefts

Police said that sometime between 2 and 9:15 pm July 21 someone entered a residential garage on Sweet Meadow Road and stole power tools, carpentry tools, hand tools, and yard tools, plus a nine-horsepower outboard engine for a boat.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Three-Car Crash

Police report a three-car crash on eastbound Church Hill Road at The Boulevard about 5:30 pm July 23.

Police said eastbound motorist Stephen A. Dohoney, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 1989 Honda Accord, hit eastbound motorist Brandon M. Peter, 20, of 22 Clear View Drive, who was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, pushing the Mitsubishi into eastbound motorist Megan R. Reda, 20, of 17 Tamarack Road, who was driving a 1990 Toyota Camry.

There were no injuries. Police issued Dohoney an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to drive a proper distance apart.

Orchard Hill

Police report a two-car accident on Orchard Hill Road at the traffic island there near Wills Road about 5 pm July 28.

Police said a 2000 Volvo VXS station wagon driven by Lisa Garafolo-Gallagher, 37, of 31 Equestrian Ridge Road was traveling westbound on Orchard Hill Road and failed to obey the “Keep Right” signs posted on the traffic island. The Volvo drove to the left of the “Keep Right” signs, police said.

In going to the left of the traffic island, the Volvo collided with a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix sedan driven by Kerri Ann Cullinan, 18, of 12 Monitor Hill Road, police said. The Pontiac was traveling around the traffic island in the proper manner, police said.

There were no injuries, police said. Police issued Garafolo-Gallagher a written warning for failure to obey signs and markings.

West Street Accident

Police said motorist Michael Hayes, 20, of 14 Boggs Hill Road was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu on West Street on July 29 when, while negotiating a left curve in the road, the auto began to skid, went out of control, struck the left curb, went off the road, hit a tree, veered to the right, crossed the road, and came to rest in a thinly wooded area near the road’s westbound curb. There were two passengers in the Chevrolet, but there were no injuries, police said.

Police issued Hayes an infraction ticket on charges of failure to drive to the right and making a restricted turn.

 

Flagpole Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the Main Street flagpole about 5:20 pm July 27.

Police said motorist James E. Miklos, 50, of Stratford was driving a 2001 Honda Insight southbound on Main Street when he encountered a line of southbound traffic stopped at the flagpole and expected that all vehicles in the line would be turning to the left onto eastbound Church Hill Road. 

At the head of that line of traffic, a driver signaled for motorist Andrew J. Rouse, 16, of 14 Ashford Lane, who was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, to cross in front of her from westbound Church Hill Road to westbound West Street, police said.

As the Jeep was crossing Main Street, the Honda began to pass the stopped line of traffic on the right, police said. The front end of the Honda struck the right side of the Jeep, as the Jeep crossed Main Street, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene to check Rouse for pain, but made no transport, police said.

Police issued Miklos an infraction ticket for passing on the right in a no-passing area.

 

Hanover DUI

Police report motorist Christopher J. Maher, 24, of 17 Papoose Hill Road was driving a 1992 Toyota Corolla northbound on Hanover Road about 9:30 pm July 28, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road near Papoose Hill Road, went into a skid and struck a metal-beam guardrail. The ambulance corps treated Maher for a minor injury, police said.

Police charged Maher with driving under the influence and making a restricted turn. He is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court August 14.

Vandalism Investigated

State police are investigating two instances of vandalism discovered at Fairfield Hills over the weekend of July 27-29.

At Cochran House, which is a major building on Mile Hill Road South, state police report an instance of criminal mischief and third-degree burglary.

Someone damaged a right front window at Cochran House. Someone then entered the building, but nothing was removed, state police said.

Also, state police are investigating the intentional puncturing the sidewalls of nine separate tires on nine separate town vehicles, which are parked overnight in a lot near Canaan House. The tires were destroyed in the vandalism and were unrepairable.

The tire puncture damage was reported to Newtown police July 29. Newtown police turned the case over to state police.

State police said that a dark green vehicle had been seen traveling around the grounds of Fairfield Hills about 1:30 am July 28.

Three Vehicles

State police report a three-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 84 about 500 feet west of Exit 9 about 6 pm July 27.

In slowing traffic, a 1998 Honda Civic driven by Jason Costa, 31, of Woodbury struck a 1997 Volkswagen driven by John Reilly, 37, of Cromwell, pushing the Volkswagen into a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Elisait A. White, 27, of Cambridge, Mass, state police said.

There were no injuries.

Exit 11

State police report a two-car accident at the end of the Exit 11 off-ramp of Interstate 84 about 9 am July 25.

State police said motorist Stephen Billerback, 35, of Bethel, who was driving a 1995 Ford Taurus, rolled into the back end of motorist Sandra J. Joudy, 59, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2001 Toyota Avalon. Joudy had neck pain, state police said.

Incident

Police report they charged Mark Manley, 31, of 265 South Main Street with breach of peace about 8:30 am July 30 following an incident at a Hemlock Road address. Police said they went to that location to investigate following a 911 hang-up call that originated from there.

Police released Manley for an August 9 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge.

 

Altercation

Police said they charged Chuck Dorey, 30, of 159 Huntingtown Road with disorderly conduct about 4:30 pm July 31 following an altercation at that address. Police said they went there to investigate following a 911 hang-up call that originated from there.

Police released Dorey for an August 9 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge.

 

Vehicle Violations

Police said they stopped motorist Edward Bartuski, 50, of 138 Underhill Road, Sandy Hook, while he was driving on Cherry Street on the night of July 31 for operating a vehicle with studded snow tires out-of-season.  On investigating, police said they learned that Bartuski’s driver’s license has been suspended indefinitely.

Police charged Bartuski with operating a motor vehicle while under suspension and operating a motor vehicle with studded snow tires out-of-season.

Police released Bartuski for an August 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

South Main Crash

Police report a two-car accident on South Main Street south of Sand Hill Plaza on the afternoon of August 1.

The accident involved motorists Michael Duhaime, 44, of Ansonia, who was driving a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice, and motorist Paul T. Cerreta, 18, of Monroe, who was driving a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta. Both vehicles were removed from the accident scene before police arrived. There was no enforcement action.

Five Charges

Police said they lodged five charges against motorist Patrick Hackman, 19, of Bethel early on the morning of August 2.

Police said they stopped Hackman on South Main Street about 1:20 am for erratic driving. Police said Hackman failed field sobriety tests.

Police charged him with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, simple possession of marijuana, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana with intent to sell, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police held Hackman on a $1,500 bond for an appearance later that day in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Geese Cross Road

Police report motorist Ashley K. Mackey, 53, of Monroe was driving a 1991 Honda Accord southbound on South Main Street, near Wills Road, about 6:20 pm July 31, when she stopped behind another southbound vehicle which had stopped to allow geese to walk across South Main Street.

Southbound motorist Barbara H. Romans, 46, of Easton, who was driving a 1990 Honda Civic, then struck the rear end of the Accord, police said.

Mackey reported neck pain, police said. Police issued Romans a written warning for following too closely.
