William H. Viebrock, 93, of New London, Iowa, died October 5 at Park Place Care Facility in Mt Pleasant, Iowa. The son of Henry and Dorothy Viebrock, he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., December 12, 1913. In 1940, he married Maurine Schermerhorn of Brier Hill, N.Y. Mrs Viebrock predeceased him in 1999.
Mr Viebrock was an advertising representative for The Newtown Bee during the 1970s.
He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II. After the war he attended St Johnâs University in Queens, N.Y., and received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He worked in the sales division of General Chemical Company, later known as Allied Chemical.
He and his wife raised their children in Queens Village, N.Y., and moved to Ridgefield in 1962.
The couple moved to Mt Pleasant, Iowa, upon retirement in 1979 to be near family. Mr Viebrock was active in the Mt Pleasant and New London, Iowa, communities, volunteering in the schools and at Old Threshers, an annual five-day event celebrating rural heritage in the Midwest. He was an avid Scrabble and chess player, which kept him of sharp mind in his later years. He enjoyed keeping a garden and passing on his love of the outdoors to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, retired Merchant Marine Captain Charles W. Viebrock of Novato, Calif.; and a daughter, retired educator in the Mt Pleasant school system, Karen A. Osborne of New London, Iowa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christian Viebrock, Emily Hymes and her husband, Greg, James Osborne, and Evan Osborne; and great-granddaughters Mallory and Emma Hymes.
Services were private.
