Household Hazardous Waste Collection This Weekend At Danbury Public Works

DANBURY — Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) will conduct a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, September 28, for residents of Newtown, Bethel, Danbury, New Fairfield, Redding, and Ridgefield.

Residents of these towns can drop off items that are not accepted at landfills and transfer stations between 9 am and 2 pm at Danbury Public Works, 53A Newtown Road (Route 6).

The following items will be accepted on Saturday: oil-based paints; stains and varnishes; paint thinners and strippers; wood preservatives; resins, rosins and adhesives; furniture, floor, and metal polishes; rug and upholstery cleaners; oven, toilet bowl, and drain cleaners; swimming pool chemicals; fluorescent bulbs; pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides (including lawn care products); flea powder; moth balls; spot removers; dry cleaning solvents; lighter fluids; septic tank degreasers; engine degreasers; waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline); carburetor cleaners and brake fluids; transmission fluids, car waxes; full or partially full aerosol cans; rubber cement, airplane glue; photo chemicals and chemistry sets; hobby supplies, rechargeable (Ni-CD) batteries; camera batteries; and thermostats and thermometers.

The following items will not be accepted: latex paints (allow to dry, then put in garbage); empty aerosol cans (put in garbage); household batteries (put in garbage); PCB capacitors; smoke detectors; auto batteries and tires; motor oil and antifreeze (recycle at town drop-off center); ammunition, fireworks, explosives (call the police department); radioactive materials; unknown gases; controlled substances; pathological material; pharmaceutical or medical wastes (drop-off box located at police station); and electronics, computers, VCRs (Newtown’s transfer station has a collection area for these devices).

Residents who cannot make it to this month’s collection day can participate in future collection days, even when they are scheduled for other towns.
