Town employees are asking for donations to fill the Salvation Army Food Pantry at Newtown Social Services.

Suggestions include canned spaghetti, canned tuna, cereal, individually wrapped snacks (a box of individually wrapped snacks are fine; social workers can open the box and disburse snacks), jelly, paper towels, peanut butter, personal care items (deodorant, shampoo, soap, tampons, etc), and toilet paper.

At the same time, residents of Newtown, Bethel, Danbury, New Fairfield, Redding, and Ridgefield are invited to participate in the annual Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day, also taking place at the Public Works garage from 9 am until 2 pm.

Items that cannot be turned in at transfer stations will be accepted, including paints, stains, varnishes, thinners, rug and upholstery cleaners, oven cleaners, swimming pool chemicals, mothballs, dry cleaning solvents, waste fuels, rubber cement, thermostats, and thermometers to the garage for proper disposal. Do not bring ammunition, antifreeze, auto batteries, controlled substances, electronics, empty aerosol cans, explosives, fireworks, household batteries, motor oil, pathological material, PCB capacitors, radioactive materials, smoke detectors, tires, unknown gases.

Empty aerosol cans and household batteries can be put into household garbage collection. Motor oil and antifreeze can be dropped off at the transfer station. Contact the police for proper disposal of ammunition, fireworks, and explosives.

Pharmaceuticals or medical wastes can be dropped in the anonymous collection container at Newtown Police Department, 3 Main Street.

Residents who cannot attend the May 19 event will be allowed to drop off items during the September 29 HRRA event taking place in Danbury.
