‘Short Skirts And Snappy Salutes’ Author Program Planned

BETHEL — In conjunction with its annual meeting, Bethel Historical Society will welcome author Caroline Morrison Garrett, who will speak and sign copies of her book, Short Skirts and Snappy Salutes – A Woman’s Memoir of the WWII Years, on Saturday, May 17, for a 2 pm presentation.

With humor and warmth, the Bethel native relates her experiences coping with General Pershing’s imperious sister, a run-in with General Patton, the inspirational visits of Helen Keller to paralyzed patients, and a riot in the mess hall. She takes readers with her to New England family Christmases, to Woman’s College in North Carolina, and to the wards of army hospitals.

The cover of the book shows Second Lieutenant Caroline Morrison in her army uniform. That uniform, along with her father’s WWI uniform, were given to Bethel Historical Society and are part of an exhibit in Veterans Hall at the Clifford J. Hurgin Municipal Center.

The families of both Caroline’s parents resided in Bethel for almost 100 years. Her mother, Hazel Andrews, born at 248 Greenwood Avenue in 1890, spent most of her life in Bethel before moving to California at age 95. Hazel enjoyed life for 107 years. Caroline’s father, Garfield Morrison, was born at 219 Greenwood Avenue.

Proceeds from books sold will be shared with the historical society.
