Students Asked To Nominate

Top Social Studies Teachers

NEW BRITAIN — Connecticut students in grades 6 through 12 are asked to nominated an exceptional teacher for the John H. Stedman Passion for the Social Studies Teaching Award. Central Connecticut State University and the Connecticut Council for Social Studies (CCSS) are accepting nominations for the second annual award, which honors the memory of a longtime CCSS member and distinguished educator.

The late Mr Stedman was the 1999 Manchester Teacher of the Year and a semifinalist for Connecticut Teacher of the Year. He was selected as a National Distinguished Teacher of Geography and shared the Louis C. Addazzio Award for Excellence in the Social Studies with his wife Caryn, in 2002. Mr Addazzio was a well-respected CCSU professor of history before his death in 1980. Mr Stedman was named a PIER fellow at Yale University and received a fellowship for study in Japan.

Nominations for the award may come from individual students or groups of students, according to Matthew Warshauer, professor of history at CCSU and chair of the Stedman Award Committee. Students must fill out the official nomination and also include a one-page letter explaining why they believe their teacher is deserving of the Stedman Award. Letters longer than one-page will not be considered; but if more than one student is nominating a particular teacher, each may submit a supporting letter. Nominations are open through April 20.

The award will be announced in late April and the winner honored at the CCSS annual dinner in May.
