Godfrey Wins Shot-Put Title; Gymnasts Second In SWC

Newtown High School shot-put thrower Jack Godfrey won the Class LL state championship during the February 11 meet, at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center. The Newtown gymnastics team also turned in a strong performance on February 11, as the team was runner-up to host New Milford in the South-West Conference championship meet.Gymnasts Second

Godfrey had a finals throw of 49-04, almost four feet better than the next closest competitor.

"As a coaching staff we are very proud of Jack and all the hard work he has put in. Double Ls were step one towards Jack's and the coaching staff's goal of him being highly competitive in opens and Englands," said Newtown Coach Tom Brant, referring to the upcoming state open and New England Regional championships.

Cole Terry was runner-up in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 8.11 as the boys' team placed tenth. Lauren Russo was second in the pole vault event with a 10-0 performance in the finals as the girls placed 12th as a team. Sarah Mawdsley was fourth in the 3200 meter run, finishing in 11:35.82.

Newtown's gymnasts scored 128.100 points to finish runner-up to New Milford (134.350). The Nighthawks edged Pomperaug of Southbury (127.650) and Joel Barlow of Redding (126.000), and Oxford placed fifth with a score of 114.700.

In the all around, Newtown's Ally Kenny placed fourth with a score of 33.250, and teammate Maddie Jannott came in sixth with a 32.550. Both gymnasts earned First Team All SWC accolades for their performances.

Kenny was fourth on bars with an 8.3, third on the balance beam with an 8.75, and tied for sixth on vault with an 8.3. She was 11th on the floor with a 7.9. Kenny earned a silver medal for her top-three finish on the beam.

Jannott tied for sixth on beam with an 8.55, tied for seventh on floor with an 8.3, tied for seventh on bars with a 7.5, and tied for eighth on vault with an 8.2

Cam Vazquez was 11th in the all around. She won the silver on floor with an 8.6, tied for eighth with Jannott on vault with an 8.2, and had a 7.5 on beam.

Sammi Olah tied for fifth on beam with an 8.6. Sarah MacMullan tied for tenth on floor with an 8.0, had a 7.6 on beam, a 7.8 on vault, and also competed on bars.

Also participating for the Nighthawks were Alana O'Donnell on vault (7.55) and floor, Amanda Brinkmann on vault (7.5), Olivia Brosnan on bars and beam (7.050), Liz Marcinek on bars, and Laura Hornby on floor.
