Newtown Girls Help Team To Cup Finals

Makenna Cerney, Nevan Gattey, and Caitlyn Linden, all of Newtown, are players for the Western United U12 premier soccer team, which was one of 552 teams accepted to the recently-held Jefferson Cup in Richmond, VA. The Western United team was the only U12 team from the state.

Cerney and Gattey both scored winning goals in the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the tourney. Nevan Gattey anchored the team’s smothering defense. The Western United team, which fell in the final round, to Beadling of Pittsburgh. The Western United team’s appearance in the tourney solidified it’s No. 1 ranking in the state of Connecticut.
