Identity Theft

Police report they arrested Franklin Reyes, 25, of Danbury on a warrant on the morning of March 8, lodging charges of second-degree identity theft and second-degree larceny.

The charges stem from a 2014 incident in which Reyes allegedly fraudulently used the personal information of a Newtown resident to obtain a store credit card at an area furniture store, police said. About $3,000 worth of goods were then fraudulently billed to the victim of the crime, police said.

After arrest processing on March 8, Reyes was released on $2,500 bail for a March 31 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Poorhouse Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Poorhouse Road in Dodgingtown about 8:15 am on March 5.

Police report that motorist Matthew J. Lehane, Jr, of Bethel was driving a 1997 Saturn auto eastward on Poorhouse Road, as motorist Christine Anthony of 23 Dayton Street was driving a 2013 Toyota Camry sedan westward there.

The Saturn then skidded on the slippery road and struck the Toyota, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Lehane a written warning for a travel lane violation.

Mt Pleasant Road

Police report that a two-vehicle accident occurred on northbound Mt Pleasant Road, across the street from its upper intersection with Johnnie Cake Lane at about 9 pm on February 27.

Motorist Michael Burke, 41, of 7 The Old Road was driving a 2013 Acura RDX SUV northward in the left lane of Mt Pleasant Road, as motorist Thomas Elliott, 16, of 34 Cobblers Mill Road was driving a 2011 Kia Sorento SUV northward in the right lane, police said.

The Kia then attempted to pass the Acura on the right, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Elliott an infraction on charges of illegal passing on the right and violating passenger restrictions on young drivers.

Mirror-To-Mirror

On the morning of February 21, motorist John Guglielmo, 66, of 20 Gelding Hill Road was driving a 2014 Dodge pickup truck southward on Bennetts Bridge Road, as motorist Robert Lasher, 18, of 4 Cedarhurst Trail was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward there, police said.

As the two vehicles passed in opposite directions, their left, exterior rear-view mirrors collided, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Castle Meadow Crash

A two-vehicle accident happened on Castle Meadow Road near its intersection with Maltbie Road about 2:50 pm on March 1.

Police said motorist Alexandra Lasett Light, 19, of Bethel was diving a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta sedan eastward, as motorist Michelle Hazard, 49, of 18 Arthur’s Court was driving a 2013 Cadillac Escalade SUV westward there. At the time, it was snowing and the roadway was snow-covered, police said.

The Volkswagen crossed into the opposite lane, resulting in a collision, police said. Lasett Light was injured, police said.

Police said that Lasett Light was traveling too fast for conditions. Police report that Hazard failed to carry a driver’s license.

Berkshire Road

At about 7:53 am on March 6, motorist Edward Knapik, 59, of Monroe, who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westward on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Lone Oak Meadow Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Megan Schloff, 18, of 12 New Lebbon Road, who was driving a 2013 Ford Focus sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Schloff an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Jordan Hill Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred on the steep, slippery Jordan Hill Road, off Berkshire Road, about 7 am on March 5.

Police said motorist Neil Olmstead, 38, of New Milford, who was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, slid down the steep roadway and then crossed over the road’s centerline, striking a 2007 BMW 3-series sedan driven by Matthew Dacruz, 23, of Shelton.

There were no injuries. Olmstead received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, police report.

Slippery Surface

At about 4:11 pm on March 5, a two-vehicle collision took place on Philo Curtis Road, near the entrance to Treadwell Park.

Police report that motorist Raymond Rinaldi, 48, of 34 Philo Curtis Road, who was driving a 1999 GMC pickup truck, slid on the icy pavement of his driveway and the truck then inadvertently entered Philo Curtis Road.

At that time, motorist Anne Doersch, 39, of 9 King Phillip Trail was driving a 2009 Acura MDX SUV on Philo Curtis Road, police said.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Rinaldi received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way, police said.

Slick Slope

At about 6:09 am on March 5, Luis DeJesus, 38, of Bridgeport, who was driving a Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck uphill on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Stone Bridge Trail, stopped because the road surface was slippery due to weather conditions, police said.

Motorist Todd Lovejoy, 47, of Sherman, who was driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz sedan downhill, then skidded into the stopped truck, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Lovejoy a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

I-84 Crash

At about 7:38 am on March 6 on westbound Interstate 84, about 1,500 feet west of Exit 10, motorist Keith Coyne, 37, of Plainville, who was driving a 2009 Scion XB SUV, stopped due to traffic conditions, after which the Scion was struck from behind by motorist Zachary Barrigan, 18, of Thomaston, who was driving a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta, auto, state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Botsford Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the signalized four-way intersection of South Main Street, Botsford Hill Road, and Meadowbrook Road at about 7:53 am on March 7.

The collision involved trucker L. Blaise, 31, of Framingham, Mass., who was driving a 2006 Freightliner box truck northward on South Main Street, and motorist Glenn Boyle, 63, of 2 Marlin Road, who was driving a 2011 Ford Fusion sedan westward on Botsford Hill Road, police said.

The collision between the two vehicles occurred in the intersection, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Blaise an infraction for failure to obey a traffic signal.

Warrant

Newtown police report that at about 9 am on March 9, Jacob Browning 23, of Shanksville, Penn., went to the police station and then turned himself over to police and was charged on a warrant stemming from a past incident in Orange.

Police charged Brown with second-degree failure to appear in court stemming from an original charge of failure to have automotive insurance.

After processing, police released Browning on $1,500 bail for a March 31 appearance in Derby Superior Court.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for her arrest, Deborah Altberg, 59, of 302 South Main Street went to the police station on the evening of March 10 and was charged with evading responsibility in the operation of motor vehicle.

The charge stems from an incident which occurred earlier this year, police said. After processing the case, police released Altberg on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on March 20.

Police report a collision late on the night of Friday, March 6, in which two vehicles traveling in opposite directions on South Main Street, just north of Sand Hill Plaza, collided, resulting in heavy damage to both vehicles. Police said motorist Leonard Walker, 73, of 75 Mt Pleasant Road was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward on South Main Street at about 11:16 pm, as motorist Thomas Varga, 36, of Trumbull was driving a Volkswagen Jetta southward. The Volkswagen then entered the opposite lane, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, with the Chevrolet rolling over and landing on its roof (above), police said. Walker, Varga, and a passenger in the Volkswagen (below) received minor injuries, police said.  After investigating, police said they charged Varga with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and driving under suspension. Also, following that collision, early on the morning of March 7, northbound motorist Brooks Frey, 22, of 1 Orchard Hill Road drove into the “restricted zone” for the Chevrolet-Volkswagen accident investigation, after which police investigated and then charged Frey with driving under the influence. Both Varga and Frey are scheduled to appear in court to answer their charges.            
Town police, Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to a two-car accident on Wasserman Way, near the entrance to the Exit 11 commuter parking lot, at about 5:16 pm on March 6. Police report that the collision involved motorist Joseph Vazquez, 53, of 1 Stone Fence Lane, who was driving a 2003 Honda Accord sedan, seen here, and motorist Michael Raczka, 52, of Southington, who was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion sedan. Vazquez was evaluated at the scene by ambulance staffers, but was not transported, police said. Police said they issued Vazquez a written warning for unsafe passing.
