NHS Girls Track Team Improves To 6-3

The Newtown High School Girlsâ Track and Field team has had a busy past two weeks. The team competed in a meet on Tuesday, April 26, at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, where the Nighthawks defeated Notre Dame, 150-0, and New Milford, 80-70. However, they were defeated by Joel Barlow, 106-44.
Newtown performed strongly at its meet at Pomperaug High School in Southbury on Tuesday, May 3. There, the team defeated Oxford, 113-37, and New Fairfield 126-24, and fell short in its performance against Pomperaug, 77-73. Newtownâs record stands at 6-3.
Newtown took home high marks in its relay events. The 4x800 team placed first with a time of 10:19.7. The 4x100 team placed second overall with a time of 53 seconds flat. The 4x400 team took second with 4:32.6.
Lauren Pettinelli took second in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 17.1. The senior also took third overall, with a time of 49.9, in the 300 meter hurdles.
Several Newtown athletes placed in the top three in the 800 meter run. Reagan Cerney took second with a time of 2:28.7, and Anne Martino placed third in 2:33.5.
In the 200 meter run, Brook Newton took second with a time of 28 seconds. Jenny VanVeen, with a time of 12:45.1, earned second in the 3200 meter run.
The Newtown athletes earned top three results in the jumping events as well. Bri Hart placed third in the high jump, with 4-8. Lauren OâConnell placed second in the long jump, with a 15-3.5. OâConnell also took second in the triple jump event, jumping 32-4. Chelsea Gray took third in the event with a jump of 29-2.75. In the pole vault competition, Abby Keough took third with a 7-6.
The throwers also performed strongly. Stefanie Clavette placed first in the javelin with a toss of 96-10. Kristy Papaj and Meghan Condon tied for second in the shot put â both threw 27-9.25. Condon also placed second in the discus, with a throw of 81-0â. Papaj, with an 80-11.5, followed in third.
The NHS girlsâ track and field team will compete in its next meet on Tuesday, May 10 at the Blue and Gold Stadium at 4 pm, against Brookfield, Immaculate, and Lauralton Hall of Milford.
