Snapshot: Carolyn Signorelli
Occupation: I’m an assistant attorney general with the Child Protection Office in Hartford.
Family: I’m married to Doug Homberg. I have three daughters. Sarah Stofko, 18, is a sophomore at Hunter College in the City. Tess Stofko is a senior at Newtown High School, and is 17 years old. Jordan Stofko is 14, and she is a freshman at Newtown High School.
Pets: We have our dog, Zak. He is a Labrador/Chow mix. He is an adorable dog.
How long have you lived in Newtown? It’s going on 23 years. We moved here in February of 1992.
What do you like to do in your free time? I hike, and my husband and I play tennis every chance we get. I like to read. I’m the secretary for the Board of Trustees of the C.H. Booth Library, I’m on the Government Task Force for Justice for Abused Children, and I was a council member for the Children’s Trust Fund for about ten years. The council was disbanded, so now I’m with the Public/Private Partnership for the Children’s Trust Fund. It all keeps me busy.
What are you currently reading? Right now, I’m reading Four Great Plays by Henry Ibsen. I just finished reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I have to say Ireland. I’ve been there four times. My mother is from Ireland, so she took us there when I was 10, and it was the best summer of my life. I just took my own kids and my husband there, to the West Coast of Ireland, this summer. There is wonderful food there, which no one believes about Ireland.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I love Newtown, and everything in it. It’s definitely the sense of safety here for my kids. And I love the Upper and Lower Paugussett State Forests. They are a treasure, especially since I love to hike.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My father was a police officer, committed to public service. When I was in high school, he went to law school and became a lawyer. He inspired me to go into law and public service. My mother was a big influence, too. She was always pushing me to do my best, and she also went back to school later in life. She got her teaching degree when she was in her 50s.
Do you have a personal philosophy? I try to keep in mind, in any relationship — business or personal — to try not to assume the worst of the other person. Try to put yourself in his or her shoes. It reduces a lot of conflict and drama.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Watching Project Runway. For whatever reason, even though I don’t usually watch reality television, I enjoy watching them come down the runway and the designs. I do like things that are a competition.
