Monroe police have lodged four charges against a Danbury man in connection with a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred on South Main Street (Route 25) near Sand Hill Plaza on the night of March 21.that incident, motorist Rasheim Lewis, 32, was being pursued by Monroe police in Newtown when a stolen northbound 2000 Honda Civic driven by Lewis collided with a southbound 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-350 SUV driven by a Sandy Hook woman, police have said. On June 7, Monroe police arrested Lewis on charges of disobeying a police officer's signal to stop, failure to drive in the proper lane, third-degree larceny, and second-degree criminal trover. Trover involves the illicit use of another person's property during which damage occurs, resulting in an economic loss to the owner.

Monroe police said they spotted Lewis driving erratically northward on Route 25 in Monroe about 9 pm on March 21, after which they turned on their emergency lights and sirens in seeking to pull Lewis over. Lewis then increased his speed and drove into Newtown, where he lost control of the Honda and then struck the Mercedes, Monroe police said. The accident occurred near South Main Street's intersection with Bryan Lane, about two miles north of the Monroe town line.

The impact broke the Honda into two pieces, which came to rest about 175 feet apart. Botsford firefighters extricated Lewis from the wreckage, after which he was transported for hospital treatment. The woman driving the Mercedes received minor injuries.

Monroe police said it was later learned that Lewis had stolen the Honda from Danbury on the day before the accident. Also, when the accident occurred, Lewis had been living in a halfway house in Danbury while he was on parole on unrelated charges, according to Monroe police.

When arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on the four charges, Lewis did not enter any pleas. On June 13, Lewis was being held as a prisoner on $10,000 bail at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers on a special parole violation. Lewis is scheduled to return to court on July 12.

After the March 21 accident occurred, Newtown police asked state police to investigate the case.

State police spokeswoman Trooper Kelly Grant said the state police investigation is continuing.

Newtown police spokesman Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde said Newtown police will not be filing charges in connection with the incident.
