Men’s League

With the Nassau Tournament a few days away, the men came out firing this week in Men’s League play. Tom Bartam earned first place and was followed by Nassau participant Frank Colavito in second. John and Cary Kortze tied for third

Nassau Tourney

This is an ABCD style event, with teams made up as participants are picked from a hat.

This is an 80 percent of handicap net event, in which the four-man team needs two best balls on every hole to accumulate a team score. After day one, Team 2, consisting of Mike Portnoy, Graham Fyffe, Ron Molles, and Jack Duffy. had a two-shot lead over Team 12, consisting of John Dubraski, Cary Kortze, Glen Poulter, and Peter Gialo. Team 4, consisting of Frank Gavel, Len Calbo Jr, AJ Cappelli, and Jon Briggs, had a three-shot lead over Team 7, consisting of David Cornett, John O’Connor, Dennis Brestovansky, and Bob Wilhelmy.

With 18 holes left to play, and a handful of teams only a few shots back, the final round stood to be exciting, and it certainly was.

Tee times were pushed an hour forward because of bad weather anticipated on Sunday. Midway through there was a weather delay. At that time, two teams, 2 and 12, shot 15 under par and were tied. Only two back was Team 7.

Play resumed and the pressure was on Team 2 to take the victory. Clutch putts on 17 and 18 gave Team 2 a total of 27 under par, making it the Nassau Champions. Runners-up in a tie for second were Teams 7 and 12 with a total of 25 under par.

Junior Club Championship

Defending champion Scott Caggainello had his work cut out for him if he wanted to retain his title. Four-time runner up Casey Fuller was on his tail the entire round, holding on to a one shot lead at the turn; but the champion held strong down the stretch, posting a one over 36 on the back 9 to shoot 79 and repeat as Junior Club champion.

In the 14 and under division, young Thomas Gavel was trailing Colin Patrick by one with three holes left but, with a clutch birdie on 17, came out on top by shooting an 89.

In the 12 and under division, the field was playing catch up as Ryan Patrick, in the first group, posted a career-low 46. Scores kept coming in, but none were able to take over, making Patrick the champion. Quinn Helmig shot a 54 for runner-up honors.

In the 10 and under division, Ryder Palumbo played a steady round, shooting a 30 in 5 holes. Last year’s runner-up, Andrew Flynn, was right on his tail, but fell just one shot short, shooting a 31, making  Palumbo the champion.

In the girls’ 12 and under division, the entire field was separated by only six shots. This year’s champion, shooting a 59, was Elizabeth Weisgerber. Julia Haskins, with a 60, came in second.
