Alice Quayle Osborne
Friends of Betty Lou and Jim Osborne's family will be saddened to learn that
their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Alice Quayle Osborne, died
on March 16 at Gray Horse Farm in Chardon, Ohio, where she had lived for the
past 71 of her 97 years. "Gig," as she was known to her family and friends,
was born in 1901 to Dr John H. Quayle and Grace (Dayton) Quayle in Madison,
Ohio.
After attending Hathaway-Brown School in Cleveland, she traveled east to Smith
College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1923. She married James (Jock) Osborne

and served on the state board for two years. She became president of the
School Committee and of the Human Services Board and served on the board for
Mental Health and for Aging in Geauga County. Her vital interest in the
Community Church of Chesterland (a United Church of Christ Church) led to her
election to the National Board of Homeland Ministries.
Her strength of conviction found her marching for two large issues of her
lifetime - the right to vote for women and civil rights (in Selma).
She was predeceased by her husband, Jock, and by her two brothers, John H.
Quayle of Stamford and William H. Quayle of Cleveland, Ohio.
In addition to her son, James, Jr, and Betty Lou, she is survived by her son,

Titgemeier of Chardon; ten grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren in Ohio,
