New Superintendent of Schools Evan Pitkoff is now well-adjusted in his new home in the central office. He arrived last week for his first day and discovered that secretary Kathy June was on vacation. Then, he quickly discovered that there was no coffee waiting for him. He was told he could get coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. Apparently, former superintendent John R. Reed opposed the daily brewing of coffee at the central office. I think there may be a policy change in the offing.

Dr Pitkoff attended his first official school board meeting Tuesday night, and wanting to make a good first impression he did what any self-respecting professional would do –– he tried to win friends by giving away chocolate. Behind each nameplate at the board room table was a KitKat.

Obviously, the new superintendent is making a good first impression on someone. He stepped out of his office to attend a meeting and came back later to an office full of flowers from several well-wishers. Frankly, it all looked a little bit funereal. He said, “There were so many flowers in the office I thought I had died, but I knew I had died and gone to heaven because I’m in Newtown.”

Chocolate and flattery. I like this guy’s bag of tricks.

The Treadwell Park pool is a great place to cool off, but it’s also fun for those who enjoy trivia. Each day, the lifeguards there ask trivia questions over the PA system. Each kid who correctly answers the question receives a prize, usually candy.

OK, here’s my question. Who keeps vandalizing Treadwell Park? The person with the correct answer may even get a prize … from the Newtown Police Department.

Congratulations to Jen (Woycik) Perrone who gave birth to her third child Monday. She and her husband Jeff are the proud parents of a baby girl: Karson Naeve Perrone, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 10 ounces. The couple now has two girls and a boy.

Jen graduated from Newtown High School in 1988 and is now a kindergarten teacher at Hawley School. Jen’s mother, Janet Woycik, is the library director at the Cyrenius H. Booth Library. These days, she’s also a very proud grandma.

Jill Dunham showed up for work in the antiques advertising department at The Bee one day last week wearing two different shoes. They were both blue, though.

This is a photo of my newest fan –– Abbey Jones, who just joined the Jones family on Great Ring Road, moving there from Oxford. She was very glad to find a column written by a cat in her new local newspaper.

Last week, I told you that Bill Sarcozi had recently received a new pair of contacts at the ripe old age of 97. It turns out he actually had cataract surgery instead, which makes a lot more sense. Either way, Bill is now seeing much more clearly, and that’s what’s most important.

Loreny Hazel, a patient representative at Dr Isgut’s office, says she was overwhelmed by the number of cards, prayers, and well-wishes she received from patients after her recent surgery. “I just want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart,” she said. Loreny had a total knee replacement on May 22 and came back to work last week.

Michelle Babyak and her husband Kirk are just back from an expense-paid trip to the luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa on Waikiki Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. Michelle earned the trip as an independent consultant with PartyLite Gifts, Inc, a company she has been with since 1998.

Marty Maciag and his wife Martha Millett went to Niagara Falls over the July 4 holiday weekend to attend a wedding. They tried a little late to book a room, however, so all they could find was a small motel outside of town that looked, to Marty, like he was time-traveling back into the 30s or 40s. There were even two old cars parked outside that he could have sworn had bullet holes in them. The place was clean, however, and the price was right.

Louise Tambascio reports that longtime waitress Heather Piccirillo and her sister Eileen Ruthier, who also used to work at My Place Restaurant, are resting comfortably in Yale New-Haven Hospital after undergoing a kidney transplant on Tuesday. Heather gave one of her kidneys to her 28-year-old sister, who had experienced kidney failure as a result of lupus, an autoimmune disorder. Louise drove to New Haven on Wednesday and said Eileen is already up and walking. Heather expects to be back at work in about a month.

Dr Henry Gellert’s office has been having an Ugliest Bridesmaid dress contest to help raise money for breast cancer research. Well, earlier this week I was told that Dr Gellert went to My Place Restaurant in his dress. He has been wearing it often lately. I was told he forgot he had it on, but deep down I think he likes the new look. While at My Place Dr Gellert was approached by a patron who bluntly told him the dress was ugly and handed him 20 bucks. Hopefully he remembered to put it in his contest can in hopes of winning the ugliest dress contest. The winner will be announced August 19.

Jerry Valenta’s landscaping efforts ended on Saturday when he had an encounter with a bunch of angry yellow jackets. Enough is enough, he decided, and promptly hired a neighborhood kid to do the rest of the work. But while he was showing the youth what needed to be done, another yellow jacket found Jerry and he got stung again.

I will strike again one week from now, so be sure to…
