More Than 1,000 Served During Inaugural Restaurant Week

Newtown held its first annual Restaurant Week September 6–16, attracting more than 1,000 diners from over 12 towns throughout Fairfield County, according to organizers.

The 11-day dining celebration included 13 local Newtown restaurants and eateries participating with meal deals and “Buy One, Get One” offers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition, diners were invited to complete a free raffle to win one of three prizes donated by McLaughlin Vineyards.

“For our first time, I am very pleased with the support and participation we received for Restaurant Week,” said event coordinator Tricia Farin, owner of Jantris Marketing Services. “Even with the event lasting 11 days, we had a gentleman call us on September 15 asking if we could extend the promotions into the next week as he didn’t have the chance to visit all the restaurants on the list.”

“The first Friday of Restaurant Week was our busiest nonholiday Friday in the history of our business. Restaurant Week definitely was a success for us,” stated Angelo Marini, owner of Sal e Pepe Contemporary Italian Bistro and an event organizer.

Dee Dee Morlock of McLaughlin Vineyards donated three raffle prizes, including a bottle of wine, a wine basket, and a private wine tasting for six. Raffle winners were randomly chosen by Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, Title Sponsor Tim Haas of Haas Insurance Agency, and Newtown Chamber President Ann Marie Deweese.

The three winners were Robert and Mary Korin of Bethel, Laurie and Mike Subrizi of Monroe and Newtown’s Monsignor Robert Weiss of St Rose of Lima Parish. All winners were invited to come to the vineyard to pick up their prizes.

Newtown Restaurant Week was also about giving back to the community, with $500 from the proceeds being donated to the Newtown High School Scholarship Association. The funds are earmarked to support a student looking to pursue culinary arts after high school.

A dedicated website (www.newtownrestaurantweek.com) is available to view information about participating restaurants and the special menus offered during the 11-day event.
