The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will present artist Shauna Shane painting in oil, at a meeting of SCAN, Wednesday, July 22, at 1:30 pm, in the lower level of  Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street. Ms Shane will demonstrate painting a figure. It is not necessary to be a member of SCAN to attend. Admission is free.

A professional painter for more than 34 years, Ms Shane is represented in collections in the US and around the world, including the governor’s portrait in the State Capitol in Helena, Montana.

Selected in 2010 as Resident Artist at the New Britain Museum of American Art, she began her career as Resident Artist at Yellowstone National Park. She is Signature Member of CT Pastel Society, and an Elected Artist Member of Lyme Art Association and CT Plein Air Society.

Ms Shane has exhibited in international competitions around the country, including Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of America, and Salmagundi Club exhibits in New York City. She has exhibited and received major awards in the last eight years of Renaissance Pastel International Exhibits. Recent awards were received in the 2012 and 2013 Hudson Valley Artists Exhibit. Juried Paint Outs include Brandywine, Penn. (October 2013), St Petersburg, Fla. (2010), and Bradenton, Fla. (2012).

Working in a variety of mediums, Ms Shane's paintings are saturated with light and color, informed by many years of painting from life. Whether of still life, landscape, animals, or the figure, her paintings reflect a solid academic training as well as the ability to communicate the emotion and unique atmosphere of a scene.

As a  demonstrator and teacher, Ms Shane takes pride in her ability to convey to others how to see and understand the visual world in a way that makes their artistic journey enjoyable and productive. Her versatility is showcased in her effective and inspirational instruction in oil, pastel, and watercolor. Students can join her classes at the Glastonbury Art Guild, the West Hartford Art League, and in her own studio in Storrs.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is always available by contacting Ruth Newquist at 203-426-6654.
