Krista Adams’s crystal voice held a rapt audience Saturday, September 13 as she gave a musical performance during the annual Mozart, Merlot, and Mums fundraiser benefiting Kevin’s Community Center (KCC).

The KCC is a free medical clinic in Newtown opened on Wednesdays for residents 18 and older who are uninsured or underinsured. Joining Ms Adams onstage at the Edmond Town Hall theater was Broadway performer Frank Mastrone. As the two performed songs from various musical genres, volunteers upstairs in the Alexandria Room prepared a catered silent auction and wine tasting for the themed fundraiser: “Building For the Future,” as KCC members continue to plan for a new, free standing building on Turnberry Lane off Toddy Hill Road behind Curtis Packaging.

As the performance ended and guests arrived upstairs, KCC founder and Medical Director Michael Taweh, DM spoke with Dr Donald Gordon, a volunteering physician with KCC.

Speaking with Ms Santilli was guest Ghassan Elerd, while beside them and shaking hands with Mr Mastrone were Bob Doyle and Jim Alexander. At the center of the room on a long table were a variety of silent auction items, which Jen Diggs and Beth McCleary perused as they sampled wine. Across the auction table and looking at additional items were Albert Salame and Josephine Nassif.

Alongside the auction table at a wine serving station was Jeff Oetjen of World of Wine & Spirits. He had recently poured a sample of red for Toni Haddad who took her time considering its flavor. Holding glasses similar to Ms Haddad’s in their hands with the KCC name etched in the glass were friends Elham and John Naim, Tammy Dominique, and Yolla Harb.

As Dr Taweh mingled with attendees, he directed them to the evening’s brochure, which included information on the free medical clinic.

It explained that the KCC history in the last dozen years has provided more than $4 million in medical services. The long-standing goal has been for the center to own its own building, rather than rent one of the various spaces it has occupied in town. It’s current location is 153 South Main Street. The flyer explains that KCC members have purchased the land and are half-way to the fundraising goal to begin the building construction. Organizers still need to raise $500,000.

“Please help us make this dream come true,” the flyer states.

With a new facility, KCC hopes to serve those in the Newtown Health District “for many years to come.”

Krista Adams Santilli has performed principal roles in operas, musicals, oratorios and plays and has concertized throughout the United States and on four continents. She has sung for international diplomats, royalty and Hollywood celebrities.

Frank Mastrone grew up in Monroe and earned a BFA from Central Connecticut State University. He began singing professionally at JP’s Good Time Emporium in Hartford as a “Singing Waiter.”

A few years after moving to New York, Mr Mastrone joined the first national tour of “Cats,” traveling from San Francisco to Boston. Two years later he joined the original cast of “The Phantom of the Opera,” making his Broadway debut in what would turn out to be the longest running show in Broadway history.

He soon took the role of Jean Val Jean in “Les Miserables,” eventually joining the NY company.
