Runners Begg And Hoyt Excel

Erin Begg, 17, of Newtown had two podium finishes this year at Northeast Regional events. Begg won the USAT Northeast Junior Triathlon developmental series this summer and placed third at the USA Track & Field Northeast Cross Country Championships held this fall in Queensbury, New York. 

The winner of the USAT Northeast Triathlon Series was determined from the person with the three highest finishes during the 2011 developmental summer series. Begg won the Mossman Triathlon (Connecticut), the Cayuga Lakes Triathlon (New York) and placed second at the Crabman Triathlon (Rhode Island).

After competing in the upcoming USATF national cross country championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina next month, she will turn her training toward the US Ironman Triathlon National Championships to be held next August in New York City.

In 2010, Begg was ranked 16th in the nation by USAT (triathlon) in her age group and fifth in the nation for her age. In 2011, she has obtained Honorable Mention All American status for her triathlon accomplishments.

Kevin Hoyt, of Newtown, was Keene State’s lone runner in the men’s field of the NCAA Division III cross country championship, held at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis. this past weekend. Hoyt narrowly missed in his All-American bid, placing 46th on the 8K course with a time of 24:56.
