Healing Hearts Holiday Bereavement Sessions Slated
SOUTHBURY â While the holidays arrive with joy and the anticipation of spending meaningful time with friends and family, for many who are grieving the loss of loved ones, the holidays can be the most dreaded time of the year.
The Healing Hearts Center for Grieving Children & Families, a bereavement center established by Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT, Inc, will offer five Thursday group events in December at the Federation of Jewish Communities of Western CT to help those who are grieving during the holidays.
âGroup members have a chance to share the story of their loss, as well as how they are coping,â explained Jenny Casey, MSW, group facilitator. âThey may be dealing with great sadness, depression, anger, fear, or confusion. They may also be dealing with their own or othersâ expectations that the holidays should be enjoyable, and they may feel pressure to socialize, decorate, and feel merry and bright when they just donât have it in them.â
For the bereaved during the holidays, what once was enjoyable may now be draining and depressing. They are missing their loved ones and just donât have the energy or desire to celebrate.
âAnd itâs not just one day to get through â itâs a season,â said Ms Casey. âStarting after Halloween, the decorations begin to go up and the newspapers, magazines, and airwaves are filled with holiday themes and commercials. All of this can add to feelings of sadness and loneliness.â
Attending a support group like Holidays and Grief can help people get through the season.
âDeath and grief are not topics that people generally like to talk about,â said Ms Casey. âThe bereaved may feel isolated and alone. Sharing with others who can relate normalizes feelings and experiences, and provides support and perspective.â
The Holidays and Grief Support Group meets Thursdays, December 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 from 3:30 to 4:45 pm at 440 Main Street North, Southbury.
