OAKWOOD 4, NEWTOWN 1 (State Open Cup): The Newtown Strikers competed in their first Spring Open Cup match against the former State Champion, Oakwood. The Strikers small roster, due to injuries and conflicts, played into the Oakwood strengths as Newtown was forced to take players from key offensive positions and put them into the defensive mix. Michael Vanasse was able to score for the Strikers but Oakwood netted two of there own in the first half. Ryan Taplin, Marcus Tracy and Chris Wolcott all provided tireless midfield minutes, but the Strikerâs ball movement was countered by Oakwoodâs superb passing and aggressive defense. Matthew McFaddenâs and Mike Bonsignoreâs defense was solid but the patient Oakwood rallied in the second half to net two more as they went on to win 4-1.
