Continued Fundraising Efforts
The Newtown High School Varsity Winter Guard served more than 160 meals of pasta, meatballs, rolls, salad, and homemade desserts to a hungry and supportive crowd Friday, January 20, as the group of 20 Newtown students continued their fundraising efforts to earn money to offset the $600 cost each faces for traveling to the Winter Guard International Championships in Dayton, Ohio, in April.
In addition to feeding those who bought dinner tickets for the event, the guard also prepared 50 dinners that were purchased in support of The Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury.
NHS Winter Guard Fundraising Co-Chair Joann Bissonnette said the Varsity Guard felt privileged to being able to help others as they helped themselves.
âBeing able to also help feed women and children in crisis made this a win-win event for us,â she Ms Bissonnette.
The Newtown United Methodist Church, which holds its own monthly Spaghetti Supper on the first Saturday of each month, played host to the NHS Winter Guardâs event.
âI donât know what I would have done without [Newtown United Methodist Church] Spaghetti Supper director] Martha Millet showing us the ropes,â said Co-Chair Robbin Allen, who called the event a great success.
The evening also included a silent auction that featured gift certificates and item donations from many Newtown businesses, including My Place Restaurant, The Inn at Newtown, Pub 25, Mona Lisa of Newtown, Stone River Grille, Stop & Shop, Big Y, Cork and Barrel, and Tastefully Simple, courtesy of Independent Consultant Judi DeWolfe.
Fundraising for the group continues in February and March with bottle and can drives and âShake-a-Canâ donation requests. (Check The Newtown Beeâs calendars, online and in print, for dates and times.)
The 2012 Winter Guard season kicks off this Saturday with a Musical Arts Conference competition at Masuk High School, where the Varsity Guard will debut their show âBack on the Road.â
