Two Burn Victims Discharged From Hospital

By Andrew Gorosko

Two boys who received burns in a February 15 cooking fire at a Black Bridge Road home, and were then admitted as patients for medical treatment at Bridgeport Hospital, were discharged from the hospital early this week, a hospital spokesman said February 22.

Bridgeport Hospital spokesman John Cappiello said that the unidentified boys, ages 16 and 17, were discharged after having been treated for their burns.

Officials have declined to disclose the identities of the two boys who were injured in the cooking accident that occurred about 4:35 pm on February 15 when the boys were by themselves at a home at 43 Black Bridge Road in Sandy Hook. The parents of the boys also have declined to disclose the victims’ identities.

On February 16, both boys had been listed by the hospital as patients in fair condition.

Fire officials have said that the boys had been heating some cooking oil to make french fires. When the cooking oil accidentally ignited, water was thrown onto it in an effort to extinguish the fire, but the burning oil then shot outward from the cooking vessel, burning the two boys.

The two boys, one of whom lives at the residence where the accident occurred, are described as friends.

Both boys were conscious and alert before being transported by ambulance volunteers to Bridgeport Hospital for burn treatment, with one of the boys having received more burns than the other youth, according to fire officials.

The cooking fire caused smoke damage to the house, which remains habitable. Firefighters used high-powered fans to clear the house of residual smoke.

Black Bridge Road is a side street off Walnut Tree Hill Road.
