A Successful Film Festival

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following in helping to make the Connecticut Film Festival a success:

Our board members who worked extremely hard in all aspects in helping to bring this cultural event to Newtown; Thomas Carruthers of Connecticut Film Festival who did a wonderful job of coordinating the films; Newtownâs State Representative Christopher Lyddy who is also on the Education, Public Health, and Human Services Committees in sharing his knowledge and the evening with us; Shannon Hicks for giving the event such great publicity in The Newtown Bee; The Inn at Newtown for providing an elegant film industry reception; JP Shannon Jr for providing great guitar music at the reception; our volunteers, Heather Irving, Kristine Humber, Kyle and Amy Mangold, and Lil Orlowski, we appreciate everything you did to help throughout the day. A very special thank you to the Town of Newtown and Donna and Paul Mangiafico for their support of this particular endeavor.

The highlight of the event was the [rough cut] screening of Harvey Hubbellâs Dislecksia: The Movie. Mr Hubbell, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and Newtown native, gave his audience a truly remarkable experience in sharing his personal life and the latest scientific knowledge of the disability called dyslexia. After the film, Mr Hubbell provided an enlightening panel discussion with renowned experts in the field, side-by-side with parents and children affected by dyslexia, opening up discussion and dialogue together with an audience participation. We want to thank Mr Hubbell for sharing his amazing film preview and for providing invaluable information and resources in gaining knowledge on all aspects of dyslexia. We look forward to when he finishes this astonishing documentary, which will touch millions of educators, parents and children alike in the future. I would also like to congratulate the winner of the second annual Recycled Art Earth Day Contest, [Pat Barkman]. We hope that you will enjoy your tickets to the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission âFlagpole Radio CafÃ©â performance at Edmond Town Hall Theatre on May 30 with guest artists Daria and Wendy Musk. It is our seasonâs finale with more shows starting back up in September.

The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission plans are to continue in the future in bringing outstanding artistic events and to lend much support to our local artists and nonprofit art organizations so the arts can flourish and grow within our community. Why Gun Violence Is Higher In The US

I want to clarify something that was not clear in my letter. Newtown DOES have an affordable housing plan, put together with the aid of the Council of Governments (COG) in 2022 and approved by the LC that year. The strategies in that plan are to "encourage", "support", "explore", "promote" various aspects of state and local affordable housing programs. Those strategies are largely repeated in the Housing Chapter of the Plan of Conservation and Development being finalized now. Newtown needs to measure its performance against those strategies and refine them to reflect the current situation and evaluate whether we are eligible for a moratorium on 8-30(g) projects if we have met the criteria. It's a question of being more specific and more rigorous in what we as a community would like to see to address this real and serious need, rather than to be on our heels when a developer proposes a project on their terms. An independent look outside the application process would be best for that. Thank you. Peter.

Discusses Affordable Housing

I on Glover Ave. walk my two Labs every morning and evening. Drivers are constantly cutting me off at the shopping center entrance and other driveways. There is no understanding of pedestrians rights. Drives make left turns onto Queen when its forbidden. Most cars cruse right thru the crosswalks without stopping for pedestrians. The Police have not issued one citation nor even a warming for crosswalk violations. The situation is out of control and now a loved resident, Pete, and a pet, Coby have been killed. Time for a plan. The problem is not Intersections, nor traffic, the problem 98s drivers and lack of enforcement. The plan need to create a culture that drivers obey speed limits and honor pedestrians right of ways. Isn't that the job of the Police Department and The Police Commission, to protect Newtowns citizens. This is a call to action.

Its already too late, the Nimby mob have scared developers so that their only option is to use the state wide 8-30 exemption to get around the local zoning board. Thanks Nimby mob.

Backs Moratorium On Dense Development Applications

Ya gotta pay more to live in a Blue state and subsidize the 'affordable' folks.
