Assault Charge

State police report a violent incident on February 15 involving a Garner Correctional Institution inmate and a correction officer in which the inmate injured the 44-year-old male officer.

State police said that they were called to Garner, the state’s high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road, at about 3:51 pm that day to investigate a report of an inmate assaulting a correction officer.

Inmate David L. Joyce, 48, allegedly attacked the correction officer while the officer was performing his prison duties, state police said. The officer was then transported to Danbury Hospital to be treated for injuries, state police said. Joyce was not injured, according to state police.

During their investigation, Joyce was uncooperative, state police said.

State police arrested Joyce on charges of assault on a correction officer and failure to submit to fingerprinting. The assault charge is a felony.

Joyce was arraigned on the charges on February 16 in Danbury Superior Court. He is scheduled to enter pleas to the two charges at his next court appearance which is slated for March 15.

Joyce is serving a 90-year sentence in Garner in connection with his felony murder conviction.
