Mystery Writing Course For

Young Adults

The Booth Library Creative Writing Group for Young Adults will offer a writing course on Mysteries and Adventure Thrillers, Thursday evenings, starting April 26. The group will be led by Julie Stern, retired teacher, writer, and Newtown resident, with assistance from Wendy Wipprecht, one of the library’s adult writer volunteers, and teen mentor Emily Ashbolt.

The class will stress connections and differences between mysteries, thrillers, crime stories, and adventures; building conflict into ordinary situations to generate plot; using dialogue to make a story move and telling an entire story through dialogue; and creating a mood through the tone of the narration. 

The group will meet from 6 to 8 pm, on five consecutive Thursday evenings, April 26, May 3, 10, 17, and 24, with a makeup class on May 31, if needed.  There is a limit of ten students from grades 6 through 8. Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown students and residents. There is no fee. 

All sessions will allow time for writing and sharing stories in progress as well as one-on-one communication between adults and young people.  Sharing is an important part of all writing groups.
