Even though Matt McCarthy left his scholastic football career behind him on the Fitch High School field last December in the CIAC Class L state semi-finals, there was still some football to play before he packed his bags for the University of Connecticut.

Matt, a star tight end and defensive end for the Newtown Nighthawks, who finished 9-1 during the 2000 season, played in the third annual Connecticut versus Rhode Island Senior All-Star Game at Pierce Memorial Stadium in East Providence, Rhode Island on June 29, and then played in the annual Fairfield County versus New Haven County Hall of Fame Classic on July 13.

Rhode Island defeated Connecticut, 28-7, in that game and Matt was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player.

A couple weeks later, Matt helped Fairfield County defeat New Haven County, 24-14. It was the second time Fairfield County has beaten New Haven County since the game was first played back in July of 1997.

Matt also plays with the Bethel American Legion baseball team this summer and all of this work will help him when he gets to UConn – where he hopes to play both sports. He can because he was a standout, hard-hitting defender for the NHS football team and a superior catcher for the NHS baseball team.

Matt was recruited to play baseball for the Richmond University Spiders and football for Delaware and Massachusetts, but decided to accept a partial football scholarship from the Huskies.
