Gymnastics Team Records Highest Score; Hockey Team Keeps Winning

Newtown High School's gymnastics team recorded its highest score of the season, 130.100, in a meet at New Milford on February 17, and the NHS hockey team stretched its winning streak to four with a 2-0 blanking of visiting Shepaug-Litchfield, at Danbury Ice Arena, also on February 17.Gymnasts SoarHockey Team Wins Fourth Straight

In the meet at New Milford, the Nighthawk gymnasts placed second behind New Milford (133.150), and placed ahead of Joel Barlow of Redding (128.600), Foran of Milford (124.450), and Oxford (116.500).

Ally Kenny was third in the all around with a score of 33.750, tied for second on bars with an 8.6, placed second on beam with an 8.9, and third on floor with an 8.4.

Sarah MacMullan competed all around and placed 11th with a 31.1. She had a 7.7 on vault, 7.8 on bars, 7.7 on beam, and a 7.9 on floor.

Maddie Jannott tied for third on beam with an 8.7 and was fifth on bars with an 8.4. Cam Vazquez was seventh on floor with an 8.1 and scored an 8.0 on the vault. Sammi Olah tied for fifth on beam with an 8.6. Olivia Brosnan had an 8.3 on beam and competed on bars.

Also participating were Amanda Brinkmann on floor and vault, Alan O'Donnell on vault, Liz Marcinek on bars, Alex Ferris on beam, and Taylor Krikorian on bars.

Newtown competed against Pomperaug and Oxford at home gym Kinetic Kids in Oxford on February 15. Pomperaug won with 129, Newtown was second with a 127.45, and Oxford placed third with 118. Also competing were teams of one from Thomaston, Sacred Heart Academy, and Woodland.

Kenny was fourth in the all around with a 33.4, narrowly edged out for the top three spots by Stephanie Poynton of Woodland with a 34.7, Madison Clark of Sacred Heart with a 34, and Megan Muller of Pomperaug with a 33.75. Kenny was third on bars with an 8.4, tied for fourth on floor with an 8.4, and tied for fourth on beam with Olah as both scored an 8.3.

Jannott was first on beam with an 8.9 and she scored a 7.8 on bars for sixth place. Vazquez was third on vault with an 8.65, and tied for sixth on floor with an 8.2. MacMullan had an 8.2 on vault, and 7.4 on floor, and also competed bars and beam. O'Donnell scored an 8.0 on vault and a 7.7 on floor. Brinkman had a 7.85 on vault.

Also competing were Hornby on floor, Krikorian on vault and beam, Ferris on beam, Brosnan on bars, Bella Manfredi on floor and Marcinek on bars.

The Hawks have one regular-season meet remaining, a Friday, February 19 matchup with Oxford at Kinetic Kids, beginning at 6 pm, before participating in the state championships, set for February 27, at Pomperaug. The postseason got underway with the South-West Conference championships, on February 11; NHS was runner-up to New Milford.

On the ice, the Nighthawk hockey team got two goals from Domenic Cartelli in the win over Shepaug-Litchfield. Scott McLean had two assists, and Scott Bauer also had an assist.

The Nighthawks, winners of four consecutive games, were coming off a 6-2 triumph over host Mt Everett of Sheffield, Mass, on February 12.

McLean had two goals and an assist, and Devin Marsh, Sean Ferris, Cartelli, and Bauer also scored. Cartelli had three assists, Matt Pelisson has a pair of assists, and McLean, Ferris, Ben Harrison, and Lucas O'Brien also had helpers.

Goaltenders Kyle Murphy and John McCann both saw time in net.

Newtown, 11-7 overall, has two regular-season games left on the slate, both at Danbury Ice Arena: Saturday, February 20, versus Branford at 2:10 pm, and Wednesday, February 24, when Housatonic-Northwestern-Wamogo visits for a 6:40 pm faceoff.

Newtown, 5-2 in SWC Division III play, sits in third place in the standings. The top four teams make the conference playoffs, which will get underway March 2.
