WATERBURY — Mark L. Kraus, MD, director of addiction medicine at Waterbury Hospital and a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), was a presenter May 7 at the US/Mexico Drug Reduction Summit in Phoenix, Ariz.

At the end of April, Dr Kraus, a member of ASAM’s Legislative and Public Policy Committee, attended an advance meeting in the West Wing of the White House regarding the US/Mexico summit.

Dr Kraus also is a general internist at Waterbury Hospital and the Westside Medical Group, and an assistant clinical professor at the Yale University School of Medicine. He does clinical research in the field of addiction medicine and teaches addiction medicine and general internal medicine to the Yale Primary Care General internal medicine residents. He has written numerous articles and chapters, and lectured internationally, nationally and locally on the subject of addiction medicine.

In addition to his ASAM work, Dr Kraus is co-chairman of the Physician’s Task Force on Addiction Medicine for the Association of Medical Education and Research on substance abuse, chairman of Connecticut State Medical Society’s Committee on Alcohol and Other Drug Dependencies, and chairman of the Connecticut Chapter of ASAM. He is a member of the Connecticut Alcohol and Drug Policy Council and the Connecticut Mental health Policy Council. He has previously chaired the Development Subcommittee of the ASAM Strategic Planning Committee and Gov John Rowland’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on addiction.
