U11 Boys Win Newtown Memorial Day Tournament
Newtownâs U11 boysâ travel team became the first Newtown to ever win the annual Newtown Memorial Day Tournament by dominating the opposition this past weekend. Newtownâs path to victory started with a great game against Weston United winning 3-1. Austin Engler started the fireworks with a 25-foot blast from the top of the box.Â
Hayes Kelchner followed up with a strike of his own off a deft move leaving players in his wake. Jamie Cochrane finished Weston off with a blast late in the game. Shane Gattey and Nathan Augenbraun played aggressive, fast-paced offense and the powerful Newtown defense of Weatherby, Riley and Mayer dominated their side of the pitch all morning.
Game two saw Newtown tear through Monroe Green 4-1 with Hayes Kelchnersâ second hat-trick of the year highlighting the effort.Â
Shane Gattey stayed on his scoring tear, adding one in the second half. Sebastian Forero and Sam Grossano played aggressive offense with Forero making repeated attacks at Monroeâs goal. Robert Katrinak thwarted the attempts Monroeâs offense was able to generate. Forest Weatherby complemented the offense with accurate passes into Monroe territory leading to a goal.
In Game 3, Sebastian Forero was all the offense Newtown needed scoring both goals in a 2-1 win. Thomas Leuci and Owen Sampson kept pushing the ball forward with sharppasses and great moves. Nathan Augenbraun and Connery Mayer each played inspired ball, keeping the Storm fired up with passionate play. Katrinak and Kelchner both played great in goal, keeping Monroe out when it counted.
In the championship game, Newtown had its work cut out for it with a battle against the powerful-shooting Brookfield offense. Engler took charge early with two goals, one coming off a nice pass from Kelchner. Newtownâs offense kept the pressure on with constant pushes into Brookfield territory with the fast-paced play of Forero, Leuci, Sampson and Gattey. With the game tied, Jamie Cochrane scored off an aggressive play, giving Newtown the lead. With Newtown up 3-2, Brookfield had one more chance to score on a penalty kick late in the second half, but a Robert Katrinak save and the physical D of Connery Mayer and Jack Riley gave Newtown the victory and the championship.
