Runners Enjoy Cool Weather In Rooster Run
Cool-for-late June weather conditions, with temperatures in the upper 50s, provided ideal running conditions for competitors in the 44th Annual Rooster Run events, at Fairfield Hills on June 23.Platt Systems Timing webpage. After the Little Chicks Dash, the 5K and 10K runners took off. Proceeds of the Rooster Run benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association.
First to the finish in the 5K was 17-year-old Justin Halmose, who clocked in with a time of 17:21.
Christopher Gamble, 21, was next in 18:26, followed by Mark Urso, 20, who came across the line 20:23.
Riley Powers, 12, was the first female finisher, coming in fourth in 20:48.
Aaron Trammel, 13, rounded out the top five with a time of 21:19. Each of these finishers is a Newtown/Sandy Hook resident.
Southbury's Ray Weitekamp, 44, was sixth in 21:50; Bethel's Tony Mffatti, 62, was seventh in 22:46; Newtown's Shaun Daoust, 10, finished eighth in 22:55; Sandy Hook's Jon Campbell, 42, was ninth in 22:57; and Wolcott's Heather Giroux, 32, came in tenth with a time of 27:30.
Newtown's Kevin Hoyt, 28, won the 10K in 33:57, and the top 10K female was Newtown's Emily Ashbolt, 24, who placed tenth in a time of 51:25.
Danbury's Manoel Leal, 61, was runner-up in 42:40. Quinton Marmo, 22, of Sumter, was third in 46:48.
The next three runners, all Newtown products, were: Randall Lowe, 48, who completed the course in 46:51; Jonathan Gamble, 53, who came in with a time of 48:28; and Brian Comstock, 43, who finished in 49:31.
Milford's Mark Katz, 56, was seventh in 50:19. Another Newtown representative in the top ten was eighth-place finisher Stephen Ashbolt, 27, who came in at 51:02. Peter Tep, 53, of Forestville, was ninth in 51:04.
Church Hill Physical Therapy's Matt Taylor was on hand to work the sore muscles of runners looking for a little relief.

12 and under: Riley Powers 20:48.
13-19: Sarah Hornby 28:45.
20-29: Nora McGrath 28:13.
30-39: Heather Giroux 27:30.
40-49: Danielle Marion 29:32.
50-59: Kelly Urso 27:43.
60-69: Katherine Kohrman 29:32.
12 and under: Shaun Daoust 22:55.
13-19: Justin Halmose 17:21.
20-29: Christopher Gamble 18:26.
30-39: Mike Rovinsky 28:26.
40-49: Ray Weitekamp 21:50.
50-59: Rick Bouza 29:21.
60-69: Tony Mffatti 22:46.
70-79: Raymond Randall 36:07.
