Drug Offense

Police report that they arrested John Lipusz, Jr, 36, of 11 Wildcat Road about 4 pm May 25, when he was attempting to pick up a drug prescription at the CVS pharmacy at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Police allege that the undisclosed prescription that Lipusz was attempting to pick up at the drug store had been fraudulently called into the pharmacy. 

Police charged Lipusz with criminal attempt to obtain drugs by fraud. After he posted $150 bail, police released Lipusz for a June 7 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

 

Honda Off Berkshire

Motorist Helen Schweidler, 51, of Sherman, who was driving a 2000 Honda Accord sedan westward near 227 Berkshire Road about 8:19 pm May 23, drove off the road and went across a lawn before striking a street sign at the intersection of Berkshire and Paugussett Roads, police said.

Schweidler told police that she had swerved to avoid colliding with a deer, police said. Schweidler was not injured.

Police said they issued Schweidler a summons for driving a vehicle without automotive insurance and also verbally warned her for making a restricted turn.

Mt Pleasant Crash

A sport-utility vehicle collided with a sedan about 3:26 pm May 24 near 175 Mt Pleasant Road, police report.

Motorist Barbara Kwiatowski, 41, of Redding, who was driving a 2000 Infiniti I-30, was stopped and was signaling to make left turn, when she was struck from behind by motorist Dolores Whamond, 56, of 5 Stone Fence Lane, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, police said.

Kwiatowski reported neck pain, police said. Police gave Whamond an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Formula Warrant

Police report they charged James McNally, 29, of Danbury on a rearrest warrant on May 28, lodging counts of second degree failure to appear in court and sixth degree larceny.

Police said McNally was arrested because he had not appeared in Danbury Superior Court as was scheduled in connection with his March 31 arrest for allegedly stealing $196 worth of infant formula from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Police held McNally on $2,500 bail for a May 31 court appearance.

 

DUI Arrest

Police said they received a telephone call about 10:50 pm May 28 reporting that a motorist driving northward on South Main Street was traveling in an erratic manner.

Police said they stopped motorist Rotislav Skalka, 37, of Bridgeport near Sand Hill Plaza to investigate. Skalka was unable to perform field sobriety tests, police said.

Police charged Skalka with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. After posting $300 bail, police released Skalka for a June 14 court appearance.

Brushy Hill Mishap

About 6:24 am May 24, motorist Christopher Jurman, 48, of 39 Brushy Hill Road, who was driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was backing out of the driveway at that address, when the Jeep collided with the side of a northbound 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by Carmen Lewis, 44, of 301 South Main Street, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Jurman for failure to grant the right of way.

SUV Spins Out

Motorist Vincent Mata, IV, 18, of Monroe, who was driving a 1995 Jeep Cherokee eastward on Wasserman Way, near Mile Hill Road South about 1:51 am May 22, spun around on the wet road, entered the westbound lane, struck a curb and a stormwater catch basin cover, after which the vehicle went onto a lawn, police report.

Mata was not injured. Police verbally warned him for making a restricted turn.

Queen Street Accident

While traveling southward on Queen Street on May 27, motorist Ryan Chapin, 20, of 199 Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry, veered off the road and struck a residential mailbox at 35 Queen Street, according to police.

Chapin then allegedly fled the area without reporting the accident, police said. Police later charged Chapin with making a restricted turn and with evading responsibility.

      

Ford Vs Lincoln

About 2:46 pm May 27, motorist Mary Soucy, 43, of 108 Alpine Drive, who was driving a 1994 Ford Explorer, was making a left turn from southbound Queen Street onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, when the Ford was struck by motorist Alberto Tejeda Romero, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 1996 Lincoln Continental westward on Mile Hill Road, police said.

Ambulance staffers treated Romero at the scene for minor injuries, police said. Police issued Soucy an infraction for failure to grant the right of way. Police issued Romero a misdemeanor summons for driving without a license and driving without automotive insurance.

Hawleyville Arrest

Police said they stopped motorist Rafael Reyes, 42, of New Haven about 10:18 am May 30 at Interstate 84’s Exit 9 off-ramp in Hawleyville for not wearing his seatbelt.

On investigating, police charged Reyes with failure to wear a seatbelt, driving while under suspension, and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.

Police released Reyes on $300 bail for a June 13 court appearance.

South Main Collision

Southbound motorist Donald Singer, 52, of 16 Lyrical Lane, who was driving a 1986 Chevrolet pickup truck southward on South Main Street about 1 pm May 26, was making a left turn into a parking lot near the intersection of South Main Street and Prospect Drive, when the Chevrolet collided with a northbound 1995 Nissan Maxima driven by Thomas Barnett, 54, of 66 Flat Swamp Road, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported Thomas Barnett and Nissan passenger Audrey Barnett, 53, to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Police issued Singer an infraction for making a restricted turn.

I-84 Accident

Motorist Francis Carter of South Carolina, who was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer that was towing a camping trailer, was traveling eastward on Interstate 84, about one-half mile west of Exit 10, about 10 am May 29, when he failed to negotiate a curve to the right and struck guardrailing along the right side of the highway, state police said.

The Ford separated from the camper, went down an embankment and then overturned, state police said.

The accident caused minor injuries to Francis Carter and to passenger Margaret Carter of Maine, police said. State police issued Francis Carter a warning for traveling at an unreasonable speed.

The accident caused lengthy travel delays in the area.

Larceny

Police said they arrested Matthew Bevans, 23, of Fairfield on a warrant on May 27, charging him with third degree larceny in connection with a past incident.

Third degree larceny, which is a felony, involves the theft of between $1,000 and $5,000 in money, goods, or services. Details on the nature of the offense were not available.

Bevans was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge.

SUV Vs SUV

Motorist Barbara Bloom, 40, of 25 Philo Curtis Road, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Durango northward on South Main Street near Blue Spruce Drive, stopped behind some stopped traffic about 2:26 pm May 24, and was struck from behind by northbound motorist Fabian Biscia, 42, of Danbury, who was driving a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Biscia a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Deli Break-In

At 2:48 am on June 1, police responded to a burglar alarm at Hawleyville Deli at 26 Hawleyville Road. Police found that someone had broken into the business through the front door and stole more than $500 worth of cigarettes. The burglar was gone when police arrived. Police are investigating the case of fourth degree larceny.

School Bus Accident

Police report an accident involving a town school bus carrying ten students and a tractor-trailer truck hauling lumber about 7:21 am May 31 on Wasserman Way, at the Exit 11 on-ramp of Interstate 84.

There were no injuries in the accident, police said.

Police said Theresa Diamond, 38, of Bethel was driving a 2000 International Model 3000 school bus in the right lane of the two westbound lanes of Wasserman Way, when the truck, which was in the left westbound lane, passed the school bus and was turning left onto the highway’s on-ramp. As the truck made the left turn, its trailer struck the school bus’s exterior driver-side mirror and swing-out stop sign, police report.

The truck continued moving and entered the on-ramp, driving away from the scene, police said. 

Police are investigating the accident.
