Sparks End Season With Win

The U11 Newtown Sparks girls’ soccer team capped of the season with a tough loss and a hard-fought win this past week. Game highlights are as follows:

Easton-Redding Passion 4, Newtown Sparks 3: The Passion started the scoring with a long ball off a penalty kick at midfield to get a player in open position and get the ball past the Sparks’ goalie Jackie Seras. The Sparks’ first goal came from Carly Swierbut who dribbled up the half off a punt from Seras to score. In direct sun and scorching heat, the Sparks managed to keep it together for the second half, however the Passion got the first score of the half. Emma Curtis answered the goal within 60 seconds by taking the ball to the goal herself tying the game. Gabby Reisert then took the ball up the side of the field, and passed to Izzy Mawdsley who assisted Swierbut to put the Sparks back on top before the Passion scored twice for the win.

Newtown Sparks 6, Wilton 5: After falling to Wilton in their first game of the season, the Sparks were determined to get the win in their last game of the season. Carly Swierbut received the ball from Emma Curtis and took it up field with one defender unsuccessfully attempting to thwart her charge for the net. Curtis later scored the second goal. Wilton came back to match that goal. Emily Celentano put one in the corner of the net off an assist from Curtis. Wilton ended the half with a high ball in the net out of the reach of Sparks goalie, Angela Vodola. Wilton came back strong in the second half against Sparks goalie Jackie Seras, placing two balls in the net and taking a 4-3 lead. Emma Curtis put another hard ball in the net off an assist from Swierbut. Seras had a beautiful save jumping high in the air to bat it away from the goal giving Sparks defenders, Gabby Reisert and Madi Ziperstein time to clear the ball.  Veronica Vodola scored the Sparks’ fifth goal off an assist from Swierbut, however Wilton countered that score to again tie things. Curtis put the final goal high in the corner of the net breaking the tie and giving the Sparks the win.
